Interview Between the King of Greece and the British Minister.

Loxypox, April 29.—Despatebes from Rome say that news has been regeived there from Athens, announcing that the popular ferment against King George and his Government has become grave. As a result, the Italian Government has ordered Admira] Canevare, the Italian commander in Cretan waters, to send xhe Italian iron- clads Sardegna and Umberto and the Itatian cruiser Moatello to the Piraeus in order to protect Italian subjects in the event of trouble. It ia believed at | Rome that ihe despatches further anneunce that the Powers will intervene between Turkey and Greece after the Turks have occupied Volo.

Aruexs, April 29.—Again, yesterday, there was no meeting of the assembly for want ofa quorum. Therefore the extra- ordinary session of that body was farther postponed.

The Atlantic Winter Terminus

Orrawa, April 29.—The debate on the budget was continued yesterday afternoon by Mr. Richardson. Though a strong Liberal, he protested agains: the new duties on lumber, oil, agricultural imple- ments and fruit.

Mr. Ellis put the following question: “Referring tothe fast line, the Finance Minister, in 1894, stated to the House that dalifax, or St. John, or both. were in provisional agreement to be the Canadian winter terminus of the line. What is the present arrangement or understanding with regard to the said terminus.”

Mr. Laurier replied thatthe Govern- ment is aware of the statement oe to. The question of the whole matter js at present undergoing careful consideration by the Government, and as soon as the arrangements are completed they will be brought down.

A Government caucus was held yester- day. It was proposed to discuss the Crow’s Nest Railway matter; but illness kept Hon. Mr. Blair away and the party talked about the tariff. There were some expressions of disapproval, and many explanations were called for. The meeting was not in harmony.

Mayoralty of Halifax.

Havirax, April 29.—Alex. Stephens was elected Mayor of this city, yesterday, by 357 of amajority.

Montreal, April 27.—A eensation has been created in political circles here owing to the reported adverse decision of Mgr. Merry de} Wal, the papal delegate to Canada, on the government’s settlement of the Manitoba echool question. It is stated to night on good authority that J. Israel Tarte, minister of public works, on this account, is strongly in favor of an immediate dissolution of parliament, and av appealto the people to endorse the arrangements entered into with — the Manitoba authorities. The minister urges that with a hostile decision of the pope’s representative it is only natural to suppo:e the Quebec province would not support the governmeat as strongly as is the case today, while on the other hand, Mr. Tarte believes that the French Canadian premier would obtain an overwhelmning majority trom the English speaking provinces, and thus give the school question its quietus,

The steamer Kai<er, of the German East African Line not long since unloaded at Lorenco Marquez, Delagoa Bay, 1,650 cases of war material for the Tranevail. Among them there was a whole battery of heavy guns for the forts at Pretoria, and large stores of artillery ammunition. Colonel Jolin Hay, the new United States Ambassador, arrives in England on May 2—six days before Mr. aod Mrs. Bay- ard take their departure. Mr. Bayard ja very proud of being able to take back with him the much discussed log of the May- JWer.

Count Schouvaloff is not dead, es has been reported. He resigned the Governor- Generalship of Poland some time back owing to serious illness, and he is now in Berlin for the purpose of undergoing an Operation. Had it not been for ill-health, Count Schouvaleff would undoubtedly ave been appointed Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs: He etood high in ihe favor of the late Czar, and ie a pereona grata with Czar Nicholas IT.

Through the generosity of Sir Donald Smith, who has offered to defray the ex- pe..ses of its foundation, a chair of zoolo. y is about to he instituted in the Faculty u Arta at McGill University. Hitherto the enhject of zoology has been taught at Mc- Gill College by Dr. Deeks, whore growing professional! duties have, however, induce d him to express a wich to be relieved of the work of teaching. In a recent communi- cation to the governing board, Sir William Daweon strongly advocated the foundation of a full chair of zoology, the occupant to give his whole time to the work. The suggestion has now been acted upon, and McGill University will now have a chair of zoology second to none on the continent.
