THE MISSION IN ST. DUNSTAN'S CATHEDRAL,

On Sunday evening last, the mission, which, for the last week, has been going

on in St. Dunstan’s Cathedral, was brought

toaconclusion. Tuo weak was ono of earnest and continuous labor. from the first opening of the mission, day after day, the Church was densely crowded. Father Glackmyer, of the order of Jesus, preacaed every day, morning an? evening. His discourses were all of the raost practical style, and swelled, not uufrequently, into

eloquence of the noblest aad most impres

sive type. Noone could listen to him un

moved. He possessed the highest art of the Preacher—-he knew the way to the hearts of his hearers,and the inlet to every feeling. Yet, it was not to the feelings alone that he appealed, He carried along with him the intellect as wail as the heart

He gave reasons-—and these solid ones— forthe doctrines he preached. His dis» course upon the Immaculate Conception. was a most beautiful exposition of that dogm’,; and were we to select from the Mission Sermons one which we w uld cha- racterize as a model in every respect of true pulpit eloquence, we would select the one we haye named. As the Mission went on, the confessionals began to be crowded - and neighboring Parish Priests were calls ed in to assist ina work which now swell- ed far beyond the power of one man to ac- complish. From early morning till late at night it was hard and incessant toil. That toil, however, if judged from the number of communicants, was not without its fruits. Upwards of three thousand cowwmunicants attest, at once, the piety of the people, and the efficient zoalof the

p-eacher. Un Sunday evening, as we have said,

Father Giackmyer brought his mission to a close, and took a farewell of his audi. ence, which drew tears from many. His parting exhortation was of a most practical and stirring nature. He has, withou,; doubt, effected much good, and the name of Father Glackmyer has every reason to be long and kindiy cherished by the Catholics of Charlottetown.

TAXING OFFICIAL SALARIES,

The Toronto Globe of the 15th, in anf article on ‘Taxing Official Salaries,” aays :—

“Gravely to discuss whether a Local Leg. islature could equitably or legally tax a Dominion salary ‘im any manner or form would be ou a par with the question whe- ther a butcher could tax such a ealary for the weekly amount which the receiver of that honorarium pleases to expend .on siusages and roast beef, or whether any Dominion official can legally or reasonably be called upon to pay for his newspaper or his night-cap. Toronto and other cities are incorporated to supply sewers, streets, ges lamps, police, fire engines, scavengers, bell ringers, street watering carts, police courts, markets, dogscatchers, cattle sounds, side.walks, and shade trees, What in the name of everything that is preposterous has the Dominion Govern- ment or Parliament to do with these? Or what better right has it to say that its Officials shall have all these things sup- plied to them for nothing, than it has to tel: the butchers, bakers, grocers and wine merchants of Toronto or Ottawa that they shall bring adue allowance of the good things in which they daal to those favored iniividuals, who condescend te receive the Dominion money toa certain amount, and have the hardihood to reckon upon ajl possible conveniences, and _ protection being afforded to them from sources over wich the Dominion his no control, and to wich it contributes from its own proper fiods not one cent,”

THE END COMING.

Tue Moncton Times says: There are times which indicate that the end of Grit rule in Canada approaches.

The party is passing through the process of disintegration with a swiftness and cer- tainty for which the country was scarcely prepared. The troubled Premier admits, openly, that there are radical differences within the party, and, by implication, within the Government, One wing of the party—the most obstimate and influential, and including the hope of the party in Ontario, Mr. Blake, the hope, etc., in Quebec, Mr. Huntington, and the real con< trollers of the party, George Brown and the Toronto Globe,—-favor a sectional and religious crusade. They would array (n. tario and Protestants everywhere against Quebec and Catholics everywhere, and woul! reconstruct their declining political fortunes by imitating “ a holy war’ which would probably end in the ruin of Canada. The other wing—less daring and influen- tial, and including, of course, the Roman Catholics in the Government and Catholic supporters general!y —are not prepared for such a desperate step. They remonstrate, argue, even threaten, in the hope of stay~ ing off the evilday. But their hopes will be vain. Thecourse now favored by the majority has always been the course ad- opted by the Toronto “Globe’ and all whom it could control, when the old “ Reform’ Party of Ontario sought to win at all hasgard. lhe divided Party will go to the country and will be disgracefully beaten. History is simply repeating itself, and it has taught us nothing more certainly than that a Grit triumph is always temporary. The Grits have ruled Ontario for about six years and the Dominion for four years—a longer period than they ever before enjoyed in ail their career. And now the end cometh. Uniess they can carry Quebec East by an overwhelming majority their rule is utterly extinguished in the central Province of the Dominion.

THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY.

The Richmond Guardian, which sup- ported M. Laurier in Drummond and Arthabaska, says ‘his friends found it difficult to convince the hard-shell Liberals that the present Government has acted up to its promises and pledges. Will some friend of the Government just get upon the stump and try to enumerate the re- forms, real, genuine, and important, at the credit of the Ministry? He will then ex. perience what M. Laurier’s friends ex. perienced in their efforts at public meet- ings.”

“Big Donatp.”—The slit in this bell was yesterday completed by Mr. James Butcher. It produces a good effect, and reflects credit on the undertaker.
