Of course. if West had been sufficiently lnpired to choose a. e lead instead of a spade. he would have struck quite s bonanza. This lead would have defeated the contract four tricks and West would have been 1,870 points better off.

Perhaps a case can be made for leading a heart against the bidding that took place. but

for choosing the more natural spade lead. Such criticism would smack of hindsight.

Naturally. there was a great gnashing of teeth when East- West realised the enormity of the loss they had incumd as a result of West's choice of an pen . But this catastrophe. huge as it was. assum even at r proportions when East ~ w e s i realized that although they had never made a bid. they could have made our hearts with their combined hoods!
