Manitoba and the Northwest. INDISPUTABLE TESTIMONY.

Tho London Times of November 26th has the foll ‘* Sevoral of the practical agriculturalists who went out to Canada in September last, as representatives of British Farmers, who desire to ascertain the truth with respect to the capabilities of the Dominion for farm- ing enterprise, have just returned to this country, arriving yesterday, in the Allan steamship Peruvian. The returned dele- gates are Mr. Logan, of St. Boswell’s, Scot- land: Mr. W. Elliott, Galashiels ; Mr. Mr. Snow, Roxburgshire, Mr. Hutcheson, Cumberland ; and Mr. Peat, Duinfrieshire. When the representatives reached the Dom- inion, they separated, the better to “ cover the ground ” in the time at their disposal. Those just returned made a tour oi the old er provinces of Canada, and some of them went as far as Manitoba. Mr. Logan,who is a large farmer, has signified his intention of receeding the latter place early next spring with the object of settling his sons en farms there for stock and wheat raising. With respect to the old provinces of the Dominion, the delegates seem to prefer the eastern townships of Quebec and some parts of Ontario as being best suited to agricul- turists of means who desire the advantages ef refined civilization. To young farm- ers of limited means, prepared to ‘rough it, fora few years, they recom- mend emigration to Manitoba and the Northwest, where the land is good and cheap, having from half a yard to a yard of rich black loam. In Manitoba the dele- gates were shown soil on which wheat crops had been raised 30 successive years without the aid of manure, and all kinds of vege- tables wore cultivated to advantage, though wheat appears to grow best. Meanwhile Rapid City is justifying its name by its growth. The spot was last May hardly even a site for a town, while it now con- tains its grist mill, church, schools, hotel, and a number of dwelling-houses. Several delegates were so pleased with Manitoba that they purchased lots. A Mr. R. W. Gordon beught 2,000 acres on the Flat River, and Mr. Snow, jun., purchased a

square suile of land near Rapid City. Sev- eral delegates have not yet returned. The

lands of the Hudson’s Bay Company, which are interspersed among- the counties of Manitobs, are described as of very fine quality, and the company are arranging to bring these large tracts of land under cul- tivation. They have appointed Mr. C. J. Brydges, formerly of the Grand Trunk Railway, to be their chief land agent in the Dominion.

Lindsay, of Montreal, has, I be- lieve, been in correspondence with you about promoting emigration to this Provy- ince, and our Canadian Northwest gen- erally. I have settled two or three town- ships in Eastern Canada with emigrants, and have sent 150 people to the Great Saskatchewan, 800 miles northwest of this. I have been only one month, having come from 2000 miles east; but I am so delighted with the country and climate, that I de- termined to write you, and see if we could not, together, induce English Church tenant farmers to come out here.

Mr. Jobn Ritchie, Superintendent of the Sailors’ Istitute, Montreal, would receive them there, and send them on here. Emer- son is the gateway of Manitoba, on the frontier next to Minnesota.

I would receive them here, and direct them to suitable lands. Any man that can command £200 sterling on his arrival in Emerson, has every security of becoming wealthy in five or ten years at the outset

Mr. Dyke, the Canadian Government Agent in Liverpool, would give you latest maps, and all pamphiets—they are not overdrawn. Before leaving Montreal I studied very carefully the advantages ob- tainable by going to New Zealand, Austra- lia, or the Northwest. I judged that the balance was in favor of this country, and I am now pretty certain that { was right. Ail my people are very sanguine —glad that they came.
