His Reply.—A Glasgow policeman was asked the other day what his views were on the subject of police pensions. He replied that Burns, when he was an exciseman, had exactly expressed them in his famous toast: “+ Here’s to the last verse of the last chapter of the Book of Kings.” No more would he say, and the querist, on going home, turned up his Bible and read: ‘‘ And his allowance was a continual allowance given him of the king; adaily rate for every day, all the days of his life.”

The Pipesat Lucknow.—Sir David Baird, in aletter tothe London Times says: It has often been’ doubted whether the pipes of the Highlanders had been heard at the Residency at the time the relief of Lucknow -was being carried out. I can state that on the night before the *t Mess-house” affair, immediately after we had got possession of the Shan-Nujaff, when on the top of this building with Adrian Hope (Brigadier), Robert Hope Johnstone, Dawson (93rd), and others, | came across a piper of the aforesaid regiment. I said to him, ‘* Play up,” which he immediately commenced to do. I was told after the tune he played was ‘The Campbells are Coming.” As the Residency was, I should think, not more than three quarters of a mile away, this might easily have been heard there. 1 have often. been asked to write of this before.

The time that hens shed their feathers is‘again at hand, Itisa very exhausting process. Are you prepared to help them through this trying period? Eggs have not been so high for years at this season as now; they will be still higher. Hens rare- ly if ever lay while moulting, then help them to get their new plumage quickly.

Many people get only five or six dozen eggs in a year from a hen and lose money when they ought to get three times that many and make money rapidly. How? There are about 600 eggs in the ovaries of a hen; get all you can of them in two years and keep the hen no longer. You thus save two or three years’ feed of the hen which is no small item if you buy all the food. When a hen is in ‘‘ condition” szys a high poultry authority, ‘‘she will lay plenty of eggs.” Therefore, help her through the moulting season, that she may be in condition to lay early, as everything is pointing to higher prices for eggs this fall than ever before. The elements need- ed by ahen at moulting, in addition to good food, is contained in Sheridan’s Con- dition Powder to a very high degree. _Theusauds of people have proven it to

~ be worth its weight in gold when hens are moulting. It keeps them in health, helps form the new plumage, and gets them in condition to lay early. A hen will not ley while moulting. HE REV. FRED E. J. LLOYD, Con- ductor of the Charlottetown Philhar- monic Society, etc., etc., will take a few MUSIC PUPILS, whom he will visit at their own homes.

He will undertake to give instruction in Harmony, Counterpoint (Thorough Bass) and Composition, as well.as in Vocal and Instru- mental (Piano or Organ) Music.

Mr. Lloyd proposes to begin his instruction about the Second Week in September.

Pupils for Harmony and Composition will only be received in class (of not less than six, or at the least four members,) for the present.

Mr. Lloyd is open to an engagement as Choirmaster to any of the City Choirs.
