TOO MUCH PROTECTION, ,* Sir,—Referring to the letter signed | “True Conservative,” under the above heading in Saturday’s Examiner, I wish to inform the public that although the Stanley is docked at the wharf known as Peake's No. 2, no one of the name of Peake has anything to do with that wharf. It was formerly ‘owned by me when a member of the late firm of Peake Bros. & Co., but wae sold to Mr. Thomas Handra- han in 1892, and has since been owned by him. I may add ‘that during my connec- tion with Peake Bros. & Co. no truck license was iaken out by that firm, as in those lays we tried to act upon§ the prin c iple of “live and let live,” and J for Zone would have considered ita small bt of business to make use of the fact that the Government steamers docked at our wharf so as to secure for ourselves wor's which | had always been done by truackmez, and thus, to extent at least, deprive a class of hard-working ani needy men of that employment which enabled them to ftiid bread for themselves and their families. I write this that the public may know that I have nothing to do with this business. Asa life- long Conservative I thoroughly agree wth “True Conservative” and must ald that if Senator Ferguson is in anv way responsible for the management of the Stanley's freight here, and has allowed even so small a basiness as the truckage to be monopolized by the wharf owner to the detriment of the ordinary truckmen, he has taken avery poor way to strengthen the Conservative "party in Charlottetown, and it will be found on election day that ma’ y Conservatives besides “True Con- servative” will not feel like exerting them- selves for their old party when the cam paign comes on.
