Monster Icebergs on The Atlantic. |

yesterday by our correspondent at St. Johns Nfld., as blockading that harbor, are large enough to rival the celebrated Antaretic bergs. One of these ice islands forecloses to tho eye all ingress and egress}to the port. now observed off St. John’s, instead of being conspicious for their height, are of the “tabular” or Antaretic type. At this season icebergs off Newfound!and are becoming very fragile, and that pro- bably before reaching the latitude of of StJohn’s these bergs were much larg- er than they now appear. The dislodg- ment of such enormous ice masses in high latitudes argues the prevalence in West Greenland during this season ot exceptionally mild temperature, and argues very favorably for the suc- cess of the Thetis, Bear and Alert in their present attempt to penetrate Smith's Sound. The first affect of an unusually warm and wet sprisg on the glacier fringed cost of West Greenland would be a profuse discharge of ice into the narrow marine chaneels. While} this would temporarily delay the Artic bound vossels, as the summer wears on the probability is that these chan nels. WILL DISGORGE THEIR ICE DRIFT

and be less difficult of navigation that they generally are in August and Sep- tember. Meantime the appearance of these huge bergs bearing down on the main highways of Atlantic ecommerce should be a warning to navigators that the ice season of 1884, which Segan at an unusually early date,is byno means ever. These phenomenal drifts are not alone, but most probatly form the ad

vance of an army of bergs which will require several weeks to complete their Geean journey from frigid to temperate tlimes. One affect they will have will be the increase of fog off the Banks and in the tracks of steamers which venture on the aortherly passage to Europe. The avoiduace of this passage by European steamers is now, more than at any period this season, imperatively demarded.

P< ——— The “Manhattan for June.

The Manhattan is closing its third volumn, The June number comes ina new cover,a very pretty combination of carmine andold gold. Perhaps we ought to say that it is much prettier than the old cover ; the old cover had the advan- tage very neat. The newone is very rich aad is more in harmony with the prevailing fashion. The number is somewhat enlarged as weil, The illus- trated articles are Earnest Ingersoll’s second page on “The Gunnison Coun- try,” which is profusely illustrated, and is very interesting ; an account by H. Buxton Forman of “An American Studio in Florence” describes and illus- trates the work of Henry Roderiek New- man, @ painter with whose work even the critical and sensible John Ruskin finds words to praise. There is an article, eratical, personal and pleasing about the Brownings ; the special object of which is to show the influence the gifted man and his gifted wife exerted upon each other’s poetry; and there ig & Very attractive paper setting forth reasons “Why Women should Study Shakespeare.” Both of these are papers which students of literature will find much delight in. “Retrospections of the American Stage,” by John Ber- nard, gives us some illustrations of former actors, and some curious anec- dotes and information about the stage in the early part of this century. Ed- gar Fawcett’s novel “Tinkling Sym- bols” is concluded; and there are three chapters of ‘‘Trajan,” a very effective Sstory;and one somewhat out of the usual line, which was commenced in the last number. A story by Nora Perry, with the title a Boston Man,” and one entitled Floribel,” both of them written in @ good lively vein complete the fiction ofthenumber. There are a few pieces of choice pootry; and among the noticeable pictures is the frontis- piece emblematical of the passage ot spring, drawen by C. M. McIbenney to illustrate a few lines by Willis Gaylord Clarke. “The recent Literature, “Town Talk” and Salmagundi” departments are allinteresting. This bright young magazine grows in attractiveness month by month. Published by the Manhat- tan Magazine Co., Temple Court, New York.
