‘fowls require a good deal of care at this season of the year, if there are to snow jfor them to get through on their way, jtrom the roosts tothe house. Poultry of lall kinds suffer from. exireme? heat,

|hence the propriety of building tke hen house near large trees that the fowls may ‘be protected from the sun’s rays. The ‘poultry house should be well supplied at ‘all times with av abundance of cold water or sour milk for the use of both old and }young fowls. Do not imagine that your ‘fowls do not require »ny more tood than |what they get from picking here and there ‘for it. We like soft food for sum- ‘mer use, such a mixture as Indian ‘meal and wheat bran, equal. quan- ‘tities, stirred together well, and mof%&t- pened with sour milk, being a good ‘dish for fowls, and particularly for laying hens. Keep the hen-house clean at this ‘season, and whitewash often and ‘thoroughly. The vermia flourish uow as ‘there is no cold weather to hinder them. Examine the roosting poles, and rub well with kerosene oil, or better still; if they are old get some new ones, sassafras being a desirable wood for that purpose. Hurry up the young, ‘* broilers,” and ‘give them plenty of good soft food, such jas wheat shorts, or Indian meal with plenty of milk. At this season there will be found very many young fowls that are large enough but not fat enough to market. Some of these if seems almost impossible to fatten, since it appears to be a period of growth and not ove of taking on flesh. Good plump fowls are in good demand, and high prices are usually obtained for good lots. Judicions feeding has much to do in preparing them for market.

How Turner Painted and Angied.

Lord Egremont once invited Turner to stay a week at Petworth and paint two pictures for him of some favorite bits of scenery on the estate. On the first morning of his visit Lord Egremont ask- ed Turner what he should like to do, and the great painfer replied he would go fishing. The next morning at breakfast Lord E, inquired again what it would please Mr. Turner to do; and he replied that, having enjoyed himself so much yesterday, be would go fishing again. On the third morving Lord Egremont thought he would wait for Turner to an- nounce his plans, and was greatly amus- ed whea he quietly said he was again going fishing.
