Waterworks For Parrsporo.— The contracts for putting in a system of water- works at Parrsboro, N. S8., have been awarded. The laying of the pipe goes to McIntosh & McGregor, of Stellarton, and the building of the dam at the source of the water supply was awarded to McManus & Davidson, of North Sydney.

bicycle stands for the conve mience of their cycling friends outside their drug stores. As will be seen by their ad. in today’s issue, they intend to protect the owner of any wheel left in these stands. They are the first stands in tne city built solely for public use, and will no doubt be much appreciated by cyclists.

A Disastrous Joke.—Ae the result of a joke at Markle, IIJ., two young men lost their lives and athird ison the verge of death. Three young men, Davis, Kingman and Bradenstadt, went into a drug store. While the clerk had his back turned they took a bottle Jabelled alcohol, but which in reality contained a deadly poison, and secreting the bottle beneath their coats, went to the edge of the town aad drank the contents. In a short time twoof the young men died in terrible agony, while the third is in a hopeless condition.

Hanpvsome Trotrixc Srariion.—The

handsome trotting-bred stallion Chestnut,

i owned by D.C. McKinley, North River,

was driven about the streets yesterday and attracted much attention. Chestnut is six years old, stands 16 hands, and weighs in the vicinity of 1100 pounds. As hie name implies he is chestnut in color, with a strip in the face. Chestnut isa com bina- tion of Nutwood and Almont blood. Pre- ceptor, hia sire,is the sire of two in the 2 30 list, and five with records better than 2.32. His dam was Morena, a handsome animal imported from Kentucky by Judge Mc- Leod. Chestnut was a prize winner atthe last provincial exhibition. He will make the season at Woods’ stable, King Street.

THE FARMERS CONCERT AT NEW GLASGOW

and Dairymen’s Association gave a very

enjoyable entertainment in the New Giasgow hall on Monday evening. ‘his

selves, and judging by the rounds of app'ause it was very evident that their eilorts were appreciateJ. In the short

space of time allotted to the speakers they gave utterance to happy and eloquent re- marks on the various topics assigned to them. R. E. Bagnall, E+q., spoke on “Seeds and Seed Time.” Wm, Laird, E-q., on “The Associations,” James Dickieson, Esq., on * Education,” W. H. McCoubrey, Krq., on the “Farm acd Dairy.” Artemas Motfat, Esq, on “P. E. Island,” R. E.

The solos by Messrs. P. W. Steven‘on, | George H. Stevenson, Eldon McKay and Ralph Crossman were well selected and rendered in a splendid manner, while the duet by Miss Ella Bagnall and G. H, Ste- venson elicited great applause, aod they had to respond to an encore. Miss Azoza Brownell played the accompaniment.

Mr. R. W. Stevenson, with Miss Jennie Stevenson as accompanist, were also called to repeat a solo, “ Duncan Gray,” but the chairman had to deny the audience the pleasure on account of the length of the programme,

The duet by Miss Laura Houston and Mr. Ralph Crossman was warmly appland- ed, and it was deservedly so. The recita- tions given by Miss Martha McCoubrey, Miss Emma Parkman, Miss Florrie Smith, Miss Dollie McLeod and Miss Annie Ste- verson were fine. These roung ladies, some of whom were very young, bid fair to become elocutionists of high order. | Master Edgar Stevenson gave a good read- | ing, and did it cleverly for a small boy, while Messrs. Charles A. and R. E. Ste- | venson delighted the audience with very | humorous readings.

At the conclusion of the programme the chairman briefly referred to the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen, and asked the audience to sing the National Anthem, which was done in a most Learty and loyal manner. This brought toa close a most enjoyable evening, and all went home fully satisfied that though the farmer’s life is one of toil they know how to get up a good entertainment.
