GREAT BRITAIN IN EGYPT.

Owe result of the present activity in the areenals of Great Britain and the reported warlike intentions of the British Govern- ment, is intense public interest in the pre- sent position of Egypt. Egypt, it is well known, is a tributary state, peying the Sultan of Turkey every year tribute money to the amount of about $5 300,000. Great Britain obtained a foothold iv the country in this way : Turkey’s vassal, the Khedive, got ioto financial difficultie. For the protection of his creditors, English and French commissivners wers placed in charge of the revenues and finances of the Conditions established by the commissioners were disturbed in 1882 by the revolt of Arabi Pasha. The Sulian couldn’t and wouldn’t suppress the re- bellion; the Government of Great Britain asked the Government of France to assist in putting

Subsequently the occupation of Egypt by Great Britain was recognized by Turkey; and Great Britain, on her part, recognized the nominal sov~ ereigoty of the Sultan.
