Toronto, July 21. The Empire's special cable qo-day is as follows : ** Lonpon, July 21. “The Canadian team had good luck at Bisley to-day. The day's wianings amounted to £120. Firing commenced this morning in the St. George's match, seven rounds at 600 yards. Private Hutecbison, of the 43rd Rattalion, Ottawa, won £5 and a badge, and Capt Sealand, of the 13th Battalion, Hamil- ton, and Staff-Sergt Ogg, of Guelpb, £2 each. In the Prince of Wales competition, seven shots at two hundred yards, and fifteon at six hundred, for nineteen prizes, Captain Bishop, of the 62rd Battalion, Halifax, won £5, and Sergt. Ozg, of Guelph, £3. The day's competition closed with the daily tele- graph match for 113 prizes. Corp. H. Morris, of the 13th Battalion, Hamilton, won £3, and Lieut. KE. Smith, of the St. John Rifles, and Sergt. Horsey, of the 45:h, Bow manville, £2 each. The competition for the Kolapore Cup takes place ou Wednesday. Lieut. The Minister of Customs has decided un der authority of section six of the last amended tarifi act to have regulations framed and issued for the better sampling of molasses, by which the average saccharine strength as shown by the polariscope test of each consignment or cargo shalt be ac cepted as the strength for duty, provided it is shown that such consignment or cargo of molasses comes within the wording or meaning of item 156 of the amended tariff This, it is believed, is in accordance with the representations of the deputation of molasses importers who waited upon Hon Mr, Bowell a few days ago.

The customs departmeut has refused the application for permission to export iwo fawos, to be placed in Central Paik, New York, the Canadian law expressly prohib.t ing the exportation of deer.

Drought in New England.

The damage in New England by the present drought is now past recovery, what- ever the future weather may be. Some northern localities have been favored with showers during the week, but most of the district has been withvut rain sufficicut for the growing season for weeks. Corn and tobacco in the low lands are still in fair condition. Potatees are much injured, ex- cept early plantings. Pastures are diyiug feeding of stock neces- Streams ia the iow beds of shallow creeks and lakes are dry. Grass is theonly abundant erop, and a large yield of excel- ‘lent hay has been cut and secured. The
