A news item states that one O. E. Harris, oi Senator, S. 1)., has what. may be the oldest book in that State. “It la called Iambllchus and is said to contain mysterious knowledge o! Elylll». Chaldea, and Assyrls. . . . It was published Just so years aiter the Gutenberg ,. ‘ JD with mov- able types. It was produced in Lyons France, by John ‘roresium in i552." The scribe ls astray at times. 1am- biichus is not the name of a book, nut of a. philosopher who lived in Code-Syria, and died, lt is thought, about 338 A. D. The book attributed to him (though there is much doubt about this) is the Llber de Mysterlls. a system oi philosophy tlnctured largely with superstitions concern- ing the gcds. The world, according to his belief, was peopled with guardian dlvlrrtlea, both of nations and individuals, influencing natural cunts, , easing and communicat- ing knowledge of the future, and sc- oeaslble to prayers and olfcrlngs. The "Llber" was translated into Latin in 1497, (which, by the way, was the year in which Gutenberg invented his movable types, and not 1492 as suggested above) and was several times reprinted.

Long after they had dis- appeared irom myown district, I found them destroying the stocks on the south side of the Island, and it is this (rather than any care (or the lesser birds) which will ultimate- ly muse public opinion against them.

There is a bird, the European Star- ling, which threatens to be worse than the gram-hie. It has been un. wisely imported into the United States and is pretty generally dls- tributed there: it has Sound its way into Ontario, and in time we shall be troubled with it here. All the hawks take toll oi bird life, but as these only attack the adults the bird has a sporting chance. ‘The owls, with the exception of those already noticed, ‘are so useiul in destroying rats and mice that they should be Elven every protection.

The last foe in my list is the com- mom garter snake (Thamnophis) which feeds, to s. limited extent on the eggs or young of birds that nest 111 the Ground or in low shrubbery.

We protect our "sitting" hens and their brood in every possible way, but from infertility, disease, accl- dents and other causes, poultrymcn tell us that lt takes five eggs u; pm. duce one adult. What the loss must be among the small birds, unpro- tected and encircled with enemies, no one can compute. They are gs. creasing, and no wonder.

Two things we can, and will do, when we are wise enough: that is feed our winter birds and to that extent fortify them against the weather; and attract them round our homes (where they are compartlvely ' safe) by putting out blrd-boxesso that they may rear their young in peace.

The frontlsplece is a picture of "Father Tlme”—labelled “Tempus" so that there may be no mistake-but he ls not the conven- tional old gentleman with the beard. long cloak and scythe: this ls is a satyr-like Time, with oloven hoois. and to indicate his speed, wings. He has the scythe, though, and E doing great work on the grass. A scroll in Latin (as ls the rest o! the book) in- tlmatts that "Fortitude alone blunts this sharp edge." The dedication is to “Nioolao Qulnto Pontlfici Maximo S. D.," and this would flx the time o1 its translation (from Greek into Latin) as between 1447 and 1455, A. D. ‘

Dlodonls Siculus was a Greek historian who undertook to mite a world history, which, after thirty year's work, he ompleted in iorty volumes. Only six oi these are now extant and my copy has them bound in one. Dlodonus ls said to have writ- ten Greek in a clear and concise but prosy fashion: the Latin of the trsnslstlo is only n little more diffi- cult than that of Caesar. The account oi the aboriginal Britons, in the sixth book, is most interesting and read- nble.
