Blake Under the Friendly Lasb.

Mr. Brain was a Reformer represent- ing West York in the Dominion Parlia- ment from 1872 to 1878. Mr. Blain

has published a tender and loving eriti- |

cism to his leader, aod some of the salient points of that criticism are worthy of notice. The Reformer attri-

butes the unpopularity of the Grits to|

the mismanagementiot both Mr. Blake and the Globe, and this is the way he views the last rout of the party at the poils :—

‘The Reform party have been so disas- trously defeated that its steady supporters admit its absolute destruction, and are now listlessly staring about in vain hopes of finding some way out of the situation. While I do not exonerate the Globe from its full share of the responsibility for the late disaster, a candid enquiry will show that the true cause arose from the course pur- sucd by the leader himself. He (Mr. Blake) has run headlorg on the breakers, and has sunk himself and all hig followers; it is literally true that he has wrecked the ship.”

Mr. Blain does not only demolish in his denunciations, but he suggests a way of rebuilding the shattered frame of the weak Grit body. He proposes either

the complete abandonment, by the Reform party, of its antagov- ism to the National Policy, or

else the formation of a third party of Grits who believe in protection, Now these propositions are rather hard nuts to both Mr. Blake and the Globe. The Reformers who are beginning to believe in the fature of this spleadid country had better throw up the miserable preteuce of sailing in the shattered ship of gritism, and join at once the ship which is carry- ing, and shall continue to carry, the best of Canada’s sons on their triumphant voyage of successfully piloting the des- tiny of Canada. Was it a Breach of Neutrality ? M, de Lesseps now contends that the passage of war ships through the Suez Canal constitutes a breach of neutrality. M. de Lesseps must have a defective memory. On May 10, 1877, that gen- tleman preseuted a memorandum to Lord Derby, acknowledging that the passage for ships of war had always existed, and actually proposing that the freedom should be assured by international agreed ment. Here ere his exact words :— “Since the opening of the Suez Canal, in 1869, complete liberty of passage by the Maritime Canal and the ports con- nected with it, has been maintained both for ships of state and ships of commerce, even on the part of belligerent powers at the time of the Franco-German war. The Gevernment of ———, this day agree to uphold the same liberty for every ship of war or of commerce, whatever be its flag, and without ex- ception.”

Arabi’s View of Ramleh.

Tue Examiner has already published Ceneral Alison's official report of the Ramleh affair. Arabi has sent his ‘official’ telegram to Constantiuople, and it states, among other things, that, “in two engagements the English have been beaten, leaving forty killed.” This militery report business is as bad as some political reporting. It was oaly the other day that one of our contempor- aries stated that the local government on this Island now stood 15 to 15. The The curious computation was mace in this way:—‘“The Conservatives had a majority of one, and they have just gained a seat for Mr. Prowse, which makes the House 15 to 15.” ‘That’s the way the grits console themeelves. But they ought to have known better than to teach Arabi such tactics.

Education and Taste.

Education should tend to make the seuses delicate, the perceptions accurate, and the moral character of the man steruly true. It should teach us to be pleased with quiet instead of with gaudy colour, with graceful instead of coarse and vulgar form. It should not foster pride peculiar to itself, which leads men to found the pleasure they take in any- thing, not on the worthiness or beauty of the thing, but because it indicates sume greatness, some aping Of taste, some dis- play of riches. That is unreal and vul- gar. Real Education should teach us never to set custom and semblance above trurH. ‘That is, never to like a well said thing better than a true thing; nor

a well trained manver better than a’ siucere manner; nor a chiselled face better |

than a good natured one, nor to prefer rich and prosperous people to these who are honest. It education forces a well marked distinction between class and class, and causes everything to be more or less despised that has no social rank, then be sure that that kind of educa- tion and taste is about as far trom the real thing as oleomargarine is from butter.

Distinguished Visitors. General B. F. Butler, who, it will be remem- | bered, visited this city in bis famons yacht | America, in 1877, arrived here in the same | yacht yesterday morning, and will remain a ‘lew days. The General is aceompanied by Mr. James Parton, the distinguished author. General Butler is so well known to our readers that it would be icle to introduce him, this we cannot say of Mr. Parton. In the ‘*Men of the Times” we find that Mr, Parton was born in Eagland Feb. 9, 1822, but has been a resident in New York since 1826, He was employed on the staff of the Home Journal of New York for about three years. In

1855 he published the life of ‘*Horace Greeley.” His subsequent w orks have been: ‘*Humorous Poetry of the$ Eng-

lish Language from Chaucer to Saxe, with notes explanatory and biographical,” 1556; ‘Life and Times of Aaron Burr,” 1858; ‘‘Life of Andrew Jackson,” 3 vols., 1860; **General Hutler in New Orleans,” 1°63; ‘‘ Life and ‘imes of Benjamin Franklin,” 2 vols. 1504; ‘Lafe of John Jacob Astor,’ 1865; “‘Manuai for the Instruction of ‘Rings,’ Railroad and Voliticai,” 1866; *‘How New York City 1s Governed,’’ 1866; ‘‘Famous Americans of Recent Times,” 1567; ‘’The People's Book of Biography,” 8 vols., 1868; ‘Smoking and Drinking,” 1868; and ‘The Danish Islands ; are we bound in honor to pay for them? 1869. Mr. Parton has also contributed to several biographical works, and has been a very copstant writer for the “Atlantic Viontbly,” ‘Our Young Folks” and ‘‘Harper’s Monthly.”

which this noteworthy gentleman ar rived may not be = amiss : The “America” was built by Mr. George

Sears, of Brooklyn, N. Y., in 1849, and re- built seven years ago. In the spring of 1851 the ‘‘America went to England and raced for the Queen's Cup, beating all the crack Eng- lish yachts and bringing the cup to America, where it has remained ever since. Her dimen- as onsare: 101 feet 6 inches over all, 90 feet 6 inches keel, 22 feet 6 inches beam, and 12 feet 9 inches draft of water amidships, having what is called a rocker keel, and 89 tons new American measurement, which is equal to the same number of British tonnage. ‘The follow- ing are the dimensions of her spars: mainmast, 81 feet G inches; maintopmast, 45 feet; main- boom, 68 feet; foremast, 79 feet; foretopmost,

| 39 feet; fore gaff and boom, 26 feet each; bow-

sprit with 17 feet outboard, and the spread of canvas, with all sails set, over 3,000 yards. The ‘‘America™ lays off the Railway Wharf. She is a genera! attraction, and was visited by a large number of our citizens to-day.

Description of the ‘‘“Mosel ”

The ‘‘Mosel”’ which lies wrecked near the Lizard was built by Messrs. Claird & Co., at Greenock, on the Clyde, in the latter psrt of 1872. She arrived in New York on January 20, 1873, having accom- plished her initial voyage across the Atlantic in twelve days ane six hours. She was an iron propellor, and her dimensions were;—Length 355 feet, beam, 40. feet; depth of hold, 35 feet. Her gross tonnage wss 3,500, and her bunkers carried 1,000 ton of coal. She was full-rigged,, had eight metallic lifeboats and two gigs and her decks were of East India teak. Her original machinery was powerful and fine, consisting of inverted direct acting en- gines of 800-horse power, nominal, with the capacity of working up to 2,500. She had two cylinders 72 inches in diameter, with five feet stroke. The boilers were six in number, with four furnaces toeach. The **Mosel” was tinely furnished throughout She could accommodate ninety first-class 126 second-class, and 680 steerage passen- gers, and cost a little over $500,000. She is now valued at $428,000. In last Sep- tember she was fully repaired and refitted at Glasgow at an expense of $125,000, Her hurricane decks and her turtle backs were renewed, and the second cabin was removed to the main deck, forward. Now engines were placed in her, greatly exceeding in power her old _ ones The ‘‘ Mosel” was commanded by Cap. tain Hesse, who has long been in the ser- vice of the owners, and possesses their en- tire confidence. In 1875 a memorable crime was committed bya passenger on the Mosel. In December, while she was lying in Bremenhaven, a case of dynamite was exploded on the wharf, eixty-eight persons being killed and thirty three severly. wounded. The vessel was but little injured. The author of the catastrophe was W. H- Thomassen, who had been a blockade run ner during the American rebellion, but had latterly lived in Germany. hnenieinnORNs Risen

Mining Boom in Nova Scotia.

Copper is now coming to the front with the rich showing of the Copper Prince Mine at Digby Gut and the satires now being opened at Cape Breton. Threughout the Province the rocks are impregnated with mineral riches that only await the coming of men with knowledge and capital to de- velop Nova Scotia into the richeet mining district of America.

Montague,only seven miles from Halifax, shows as brilliant a record as California in its palmiest days, in proportion to the num- ber of men employed and days’ work done. From Strawberry Hill Mine, at Tangier, over $100,000 has been taken. At salmon River, Mt. Uniache, Lunenburg, Chezzet- cook, and Oldham thousands of dollars worth of gold has been poured into the laps of the patient miners.

Miss Fanny Parnell’s Remains.

It is the intention to send the body of Fanny Parnell to Ireland by the American teamship line. Mrs. Parnell says that no response has yet been made to the cable message sent Mr. Dillon relative to the in- terment of the remains in Ireland. The day of the funeral will not be fixed until Mr, Dillon is heard from.

The Hay Crop in Kngland. Rain has caused the complete failure of the English hay crop, and the loss is esti. mated to be equal to £10,000,000. For three weeks during the haying season there was a heavy down-pour every day. and -it was impossible to get the hay into the rack-yard. It was consequently ruined «n the ground. A daily rain for three weeks is too much of a good thing. —_-- Ontario and Quebec Crops.

The crop reports, gathered from about 120 places in Ontario and Quebec, show that the fall wheat is proving to be one of the best crops on record, and that the spring wheat promises rather more than an aver- age yield. Hay is a fair average, barley rather over than under average, peas and vats heavy crops, and roots promising

Revival of Ancient Discipline.

The New York Herald’s London cable despatch states that, on Sunday last, the unusual spectacle of a young man_ publicly performing ‘penance in a church was wit nessed at Clevedon, Somersetshire. The ceremony consisted in the readigg of a confession of guilt by the culprit, and the imposition of a penance by the minister from his pulpit The young man accepted the penance and cheerfully performed it.

Arrest of an American.

Henry George, the American economist, accompanied by an English radical gentle- man said to belong to the democratic feder- ation, visited Mr. Matthew Harris at Bal- linasloe and afterwards went to Loughrea. There both gentlemen were arrested last Wednesday under the curfew section of the Crime act and kept in custody until they could give a satisfactory account of them- selves. All the papers found on Mr. George were taken possession of and retained by the police.

President Grevy last Wednesday receiy- ed the deputation of Boston dry goods clerks. One of the deputation made an address to M. Grevy, who replied very cor- dially. and warmly congratulated the firm who sent their clerks to study the processes of European industry. He hoped that this example of practical democracy would be imited. Tho clerks were to be received by Victor Hugo on Wednesday evening, and by the Prefect of the Department of the Seine on Thursdey, On Wednesday they were present at the sitting of the Chamber of Deputies. Chicago Corners in Pork.

Never in the history of the Chicago market has such a jeahdal succession of corners been attempted as during this sea- son. Itis now stated that Mr. Armour, the great packer, is manipulating two huge pork deals in connection with Fowler Bros., the Chicago packing company, Higgins & Co., and Murphy & Co. This combination is lorg, at least 500,000 barrels of pork, which were purchased for August de- livery at about $1930, when there were only 200,000 barrels in sight. This option bas advanced $2, and the clique is stil! pushing it. {Armour yesterday shipped five cars of pork to Kansas City, in order to create the impression that there was no pork there, and the market advanced fifty cents as the result. The plan is to force August pork upand squeeze the shorts. The same deal is manipulat- ing a deal on long futures. Year pork is being heavily bought at about $19.50, with the purpose of forcing November and December up at least $24 per barrel. ‘he combination represents $4,500,000 of capital,

After a iield is attacked, the usual remedy, as recently stated by us, is ditching. On level ground also, the roller

has sometimes been effectually used. Of course this cannot succeed as weil where the ground is rough and uneven, for the worms always take shelter in the hollows. The best time to roll is while the worms are feeding, and up among the leaves, for then they are sure to be crushed ; at other times they are sheltered and a great number will escape. Anything applied to a field for the purpose of making the foliage dis- tasteful or poisonous to the caterpillars, would ruin the crop and inyolve great danger both to man and stock; better far to burn the crop at once. As soon as the

crop is removed from an __ infest ed field, turn in all the hogs you can and also chickens and

iurkeys; ducks will do a great deal of good by searching for and eating the caterpillars. All these animals will eat the fallen grain, and thus saving it in making flesh and fowl. Sheep turned into the field will kill many of the worms by trampling upon them; especially will this be the case if the flock is large. If crows and blackbirds are visiling the fields, do not Jet them be dis- turbed; there never was a crow or black- bird that would not prefer a fat caterpillar to a grain of corn, oats or wheat. —_— a
