So. to show how smart he was, he had disobeyed and had gone hunting by himself. Often the young Foxes had been taken down

on the Green Meadows for their first lessons in hunting. There they far in all directions. This time Little Too-Smart had turned in the other direction. He had followed some of the old cow- It

It is extremely unfortunate that 8 great part of the average play- er's defense is based on so-called rules such as "third-hand-high." or ”lcad through strength and up to weakness." or others of equally doubtful validity. It cannot be said too often that such "rules" should be ignored almost as fre- quently as observed. For example. in today's deal East's first play seemed to honor three separate "rules", and yet it had no justifi- cation in logic.

Since South's one-notrump op- ening had been a minimum-l6 points. in the 4-3-2-l point count -he really should have passed on the second round, but perhaps he foresaw that the opponents were going to be kind. It is remarkable how accurate the point count is in its "prediction" of the number of tricks that can be won at no- trump. Without a five-card suit in either hand. and without any conspicuously good luck in the break of cards, declarer usually needs 26 points at his disposal. and in this case the North-South hands contained only 25 points. As a consequence. the thrce-no- trump contract could and should have been defeated.

However. to' repeat. East was very friendly to dcclarer! West opened his fourth-highest. spade, the ten was played from dummy and East promptly tossed on his queen. In so doing, he honored three "rules": "third-hand-high"; "cover an honor with an honor"; and "don't finesse against your own partner", but coincidentally, East gave the enemy two spade tricks where he easily could have held them to one. Successful de- fense was now impossible.

It is easy to see that if East had ducked at the first trick. sim- PW Encouraging with the seven- spot; routine defense thereafter would have held South to eight tricks.
