Hsavy Bereavemeyt.—Mr. Fred, Dam- morell, of the P. E, Island Railway, has sus- tained a double calamity in the death of hia daughter and wife. Both have fallen victims of fever. Mr. Dammorell has the sympathy of his comrades in the railway department and of many friends throughout the city at this time of his great berevement and sorrow.

Deata oF A CLEeRGYMAN.—Rev. J. Em- bree, Methodist minister at Albert, N. B., died of malignant diphtheria on Monday last, andon Wednesday (the day of the funeral) one of his daughters fell a victim to the same disease. The remaining portion of the family are all very low with the epidemic. It is only a few years siuce Mr. Embree was transferred from Newfoundiand to this Conference.

Wanxt THe Express Continvuzo.—It is stated that the business men of Georgetown, Souris, and other points in the eastern section of the Province, are about presenting a petitien to Superintendent Unsworth, askin at the Eastern Express train be continued until the New Year. Artistic.—A well executed piece of pastelle work,in the form of a portrait of a young lady, may be seen in the show window of Johnson's Drugstore, Miss Maud Johnson is the artist.

An enlarged likeness of a Fredericton gen- tleman named Currie, from McGerrity’s studio, St. John, is on view at Mr. Isaac Murley’s establishment, North Side Queen Square. The work is well done. Mr. McGerrity, it wil be remembered, won first prize at the St. John Exhibition for pictures similar to that on view here. Mr. Murley will take orders fer these pictures.

2 A Narrow Escare.—Mr. Albert E. Mc- Leod, a clerk in the grocery store of J. D. McLeod, Esq., had a very narrow escape from death yesterday afternoon about five o'clock. lt appears that while young Mc- was at work on the top flat of the building removing some boxes from about the hatch, he missed his footing and fell through the open hatchway to the ground floor, a distance of twenty-six feet. His fall was broken somewhat by his striking some bags of cracked feed on the ground floor. When picked up he was insensible. Drs. Taylor and McLeod were promptly summoned. An examination showed that the young man’s arm was broken at the wrist and that his back and breast were also injured. McLeod was as quickly as ossible removed to the P. E. Island Jospital where he is receiving every atten- tion. To-day, it is pleasing to learn, he is reported “‘ much easier.”

THE FATR OF THE SCHR. REBECCA WARREN+ ASCERTAINED AT LAST.

Seventee years ago last August, the fishing schr. Rebecca Warren, of Deer Isle, Me., was lost. She was seen by another Deer Isle crew just before a terrible gale, and never heard of again. The schooner was commanded by Capt. Fred. Pickering and had a crew of 12 Deer Isle men. At last, after all these years, information has come concerning how and where these men died. The Rockland Opinion says Rev. I. J. Wright, the Methodist clergyman, who came to Deer Isle this year, was at Tignish, Prince Edward Island, at the time of the great gale. In conversing with a re-

tive of Captain Pickering, a few days ago, he chanced to tell the story of his recollec- tion of the gale, and the wreck of a fishing schooner on the Northern Cape bar, near Tignish, and the drowning of all on board.

e bodies all came ashore, and were buried there, neither they nor the vessel ever being identified. From the number of the bodies, and Mr. Wright's description of them and the vessel, there can be no doubt that it was the Rebecca Warren.

Will Conform to the Laws.

New York, Oct. 15.

The Independent to-day published a tel- egram received from President Woodriffe, of the Mormon Church, and Gov. Thomas of Utah concerning the action of the Mormon Cooference which is conclusive. The Church has no disposition to violate the laws or defy the Government. Gov. Thomas says polygany has been buried never to be resurrected in Utah.

Inspecting Nickel Mills.

Toronto, Oct. 15.

Two officers of the United States navy have just completed an inspection of the nickel mills at Sudbury, in this province, for the purpose of ascertaining their capa- bilities for furnishing the amount of nickel required to manufacture steel for the new United States warships. It is understood that they will recommend the Sudbury nickel for the purpose.

Birchall in Jail.

Woopstock, Ont., Oct. 15. “Birchall keeps a diary, and counts each morning the remaining days he has to spend on earth. He is cheerful and talka- tive to those who have access to him, and while there does not appear to be much reason for it, he has not given up all hopes.
