Rev-lution in Panama.

A revolution is progressing ip five | states of Columbia, says a Panama dis- patch of the 18th iast. Barranquilla bas been captured by the rebels, Car- thagena was captured on the 13th inst., and was retaken by the national force onthe i9ch inst. Troops have been sent hence to assist in en attack on Barranquilla and another detachment has been seat to Bueno Ventura to assist in the restoration of order there. Affairs at Cauca and Panama are quite bat the national force insufficient to maio

tain order. Should a revolt or riot occur the situation is uneasy. There is no foreign man-of-war to maintain

order. A Queer Story.

An extraordinary looking story, but one evidently told in good faith, is found ia a California paper, the Orevilie Mercury, which says: “A man enyag- ed near Hurleton lately iu filling up an} old mining shafs fousd that thonsands | of swallows had built their nes:s and made tieir homes in the shaft, and they flew out in great numbers as he shovei- led. After workiog a time he went home, but returned the following morn- ing. No sooner had he began his work than out the swallows flewin clouds. Soon he was startled by a cold slimy, wriggling snake falling upon his back, He supposed it came troma bush near by, but on lookiog up behelda cloud of birds holding enakes in their claws’ which they were tryingto let fail on their enemy. It is needless to say he gathered up his pick and fled from the spot.”

Prof. Stuart, the newly elected suc- cessor in Parliament ofthe late Post- master General Faweet!, made a _ revo- Juliopary speech at Bolton, near Man- chester, on Thursday. He advocated the easy transler of land, the abolition of the law of entail, compensation for disturbance in the case of improve- mets ut the couclesion of short leases, and an increase of powers to Local Government bodies to aequire Jand or houses.
