Mantra, Juiy 4.—Professor J. G. Schurman President of the United States advisory committee for the'Philippines, ri» turned to Manila vesterday from a three week’s tour of «he southern islands. He takes an entirely hopeful view of the general condition of things there. The intelligent and substantial citizens desire an American protectorate. They are awaiting @ settlement of the war in the island of Luzon before deciaring themselves. They are chiefly anxious to be undisturbed. The president of the towa of Santo Nicholas, and of Cuba. said to Mr. Schurman: “We want peac’, food and presperity, we do not wish oO fight. He would be neutaral.” The presi- dent of the committee thinks that this de- claration fully expresses the sentiments of the peopleo! the southern island of the Archipelago.
