Men’s soccer squad gets win, tie in

weekend action

The UPEI Panthers and Mount Allison Mounties played to a 0-0 draw before about 200 fans in Sackville, N.B. Sunday.

The scoreless tie puts the Panthers one point behind the Dalhousie Tigers and Saint Mary’s Huskies for second place in the AUS, with two games remaining in the regular season. Tim Kalinowski had the shutout for UPEI, while Jamie Marchbank and Jarrod Faria received yellow cards. Saturday, the Panthers got goals from Paul Craig and Matt Thomson to defeat the Acadia Axemen 2-0 at UPEL

Colby O’Donnell was named player of the game for UPEI, which won its seventh game of the season. Craig opened the scoring in minute 23 with his fourth goal of the season. After a shot from Thomson was stopped by Acadia keeper Graham Little, a streaking Craig buried the rebound into the empty cage.

Thomson provided some insurance in minute 66, one-timing a fine pass from O’Donnell past the keeper.

The game was full of near misses, with both teams creating lots of offense. Craig nearly put the Panthers on the board in minute 20, sending a shot just wide of the left

The Axemen almost tied the game late in the first half when Mohamed Mohamed’s shot got past Kalinowski but was kicked away from the goal line by UPEI’s Danny Craig. Another excellent chance for UPEI came early in the second half when Rob Manning’s cross from the right side was deflected barely wide of the right post by an Acadia defender.

And just after Thomson’s goal, the Axemen nearly made a game of it, but Tim Norris’ header was just wide of the target. Norris was named player of the game for Acadia.

The Panthers end the regular season this weekend with home games against Mount Allison and UNB. Game times are 8:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

Janelle Blanchard scored twice and Allison Frizzell was named player of the game as the UPEI Panthers shelled the Mount Allison Mounties 5-0 in AUS women’s soccer action Sunday. Frizzell, Cheryl MacLeod and Josie Gallant, with her first AUS goal, also scored for the visitors.

The win, along with a 1-0 defeat of Acadia on Saturday, allowed the Panthers to keep pace with Dalhousie, with whom they are tied for second place in the AUS with 27 points. They remain three points back of first-place Cape Breton.

The Panthers led 1-0 at halftime on the strength of Frizzell’s goal before unleashing its attack with four unanswered goals in the second half. Blanchard made it 2-0 in minute 64 before MacLeod widened the gap just two minutes later. Blanchard added

and buried the ball in the left corner behind Axewomen keeper Stephanie Moignard. That was all the offense UPEI would need, as they controlled the flow of the game throughout and got timely goalkeeping from Leslie Bradshaw.

The game may have ended differently if not for Bradshaw’s clutch save in minute 61 on a ball aitmailed to the top right corner of the net.

It was smooth sailing for the Panthers after that. Frizzell was named player of the game.
