" LeClair came outside of the classroom. Professor Jelliffe introduced herself and expressed herconcerns about the film. She felt that many students would feel uncomfortable having to watch it. Professor LeClair INVITED her into the class to verify if what she thought was true. As it turned out several students kindly pointed out to us that they were there of their own free will. It was an uncomfortable situation and undoubtedly the atmosphere was hostile. The four of ‘us subsequently left. It is my feeling that students do not have to have “‘a note of permission from their mommies’’ to watch something of that nature. How- ever, when a student is taking acourse from a profes- sor and such material is shown they are in acompro- mising situation in that the professor in question has power over them for grading purposes. This does not make it impossible that a student would express their sagreement with a professor’s viewpoint, but it ncreases the liklihood that this would happen. Re-

Letter to the editor, OUR RIGHTS, AS STUDENTS, HAVE BEEN VIOLATED!

Friday, Professor Leclair was about to show a humor- ous, anthropological film to his students, when Pro- fessor Vaughn Jelliffe, Professor Peter Trinka, and Lisa (Acting student representative), decided that he hade made a politically INCORRECT decision. Thus, without discourse with Professor Leclair, they im- posed on hisclass. Nevertheless, Professor Leclair, not being entirely sure of what they wanted, invited them to come‘in and comment.

First of all, Professor Vaughn Jelliffe lectured to Leclair’s class on her opinion regarding this film which she claimed was degrading to females. Secondly, she offered her comfort and support to those females in the class who wished it. She sug- gested that they not view the movie, but she allowed them the choice, as though she were in charge!

In response to Vaughn Jelliffe’s intrusion on their class, Professor Leclair’s students commented that they knew there wasachoice. They have an active sense of humour and thus, said they were not at all offended by the connotations of this film.

There are a number of issues here, the primary one being that a professor’s academic freedom has been violated and in turn, OUR RIGHTS, AS STUDENTS, HAVE BEEN VIOLATED!

Have recent ‘‘politically correct-ing,’’ events so greatly altered the minds of some women and men on this campus that the mutual respect of colleagues is discounted altogether and instead priority is given to
