Burstow said electroshock patients lose memory and suffer brain shrinkage that can possibly harm their creativity, energy, enthusiasm and ability to learn.

The treatment is used to jolt people out of depressions, Burstow said more humane methods of treat- ment exist.

Similar protests took place in San Francisco, Denver, Philadelphia and Boston.
