Professor Focus

Dr. D.F. Buck presently teaches the subject of Classics here at UPEI. He is also the chairman of the Classics Department.

Professor Buck got his B.A. from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He did his doctoral work at Oxland University in London, England. Interestingly enough, Dr. Buck has his Masters

Degree in Public Administration which he also got

at Queen’s University.

When I asked Dr. Buck what had inspired his profound interest in Classical Mythology, he told me that he had taken interest in latin when he was in high school and in his first year of undergraduate work at University, he took Latin and Greek Mythology.

Fortunately Professor Buck lived within walking

distance of Queen’s University, and was not exposed .

to those vivid parties which one is subjected to in _ dorm life. Dr. Buck was very much involved in - extra-curricular activities. He was an active member in his department, and they would put on a Greek play in the winter term of the year.

Dr. Buck had some small scholarships toward university and also worked as a student assisstant in a health science library.

Before coming to teach at UPEI, Professor Buck taught at many universities including: Western University in London, Ontario; at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon; at Anendale College in Toronto, Ontario; at Champlain Regional College in Lennoxville, Quebec; at Bishop’s University in Quebec; and at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. He has certarnly had the university experience!

From all the experience that Professor Buck has

acquired with going to universities and his many years of teaching, I found it safe to ask whether he

found that many students change their majors. His reply was that he found that many ‘students are advised to go into Sciences, but many find that Sciences in University are very different from those in high school, and that they decide to go into the Arts.

To sum up, I’d like to include that Professor Buck’s course in Classical Mythology gives you a basic knowledge of some of the major literary influences. He introduces students to the life, thought, and literature of the ancient world.
