Now that the estimates and the Remed- ial Bill have been submitted to the House of Commons, the business of the session will be more interesting. The debate on the budget has, beretofure, not been very interesting. The speeches ef the Opp 8} tion on the Budget have been pretty much on the same lines as formerly, viz., con demping the National Policy and Protec- tion, and the advantages Reciprocity witb the United States, an the principles of Free Trade. Dr. Me Donald, of Huron, made the longest speech of the sessier, speaking four hours and forty minutes; all of which, that was

important, could, bowever, been easily said in halfan hour. Tie Government supporters have held up the advantages of the Protective system in pretty good style; but few of the ministers have spoken yet. In fact none of them have, at the present writing, spoken on the Budget excepting Mr. Foster. The great excitement of the session centres around the Remedial! Bill whieh was di-- tributed on Sa urday to the members. There is @ variety uf ramors around the House as to its fate; but the general opinion seems to be that nothing definite will be known until after the next caucus of the Government supporters, which is to be beld before the Bill is read the second time. The Liberals have had a caucus, and it is understood tnaat Mr. Laurier has instructed his supporters to say nothing that will commit them one way or the other until they see how tue Ontario and other Conservatives who eppose the mea- sure have commiited themselves. If the Liberals find that the Government will be defeated through the defection § of some of its supporters, then the L berals will vote solidly against the Gov- ernment and defeat it. If, however, it turns out that the Government can hold enough to carry the bill without the Lib- eral-, then the French and Catholic Liber- als will support it so thatthey can go to their supporters and contend that they did not Oppose remedial legislation. From the foregoing the readers of Tae Examiner can ree that the next twocrthree weeks will be rather exciting around the Parlia- ment buildings here.
The greate-t excitement in secial circles is the historical fancy dress ball to be held oo Monday, the 17th February, and elab- orate preparations have been made for its successful carrying out. <A description of the several conrts will give an idea of the gorgeous nature of the spectacie that will take place in thesenatecbam ber. The cham- ber has all been floored over and the whole of the adjoining rooms and corridors are to be given up to thesfunction. The Gov- ernor-General and his suite are to occupy the end of the chamber where the Throne is located, and the several other historica] representations will occupy the rizht and left sides. On the right hand side, next the vice-regal court, the Vik- ings will come first, then the court repre- senting the time of Cabot, then Jacques Cartier, then Acadia, and then Maison- neuve, On the left side the court repre- senting the United Empire Loyalists wil] occupy the space next the vice-regal court, then that representing the time of Montcalm and Wolfe; then Acadia and Evangeline, and New France m the lower corner of the Chamber. The galleries of the Senate Chamber, the tea rooms, the corridors, and also the Library of Partia- ment will be open to the guests. As soon as they arrive, tse various historical groups will assemble round their respec- tive standanis, according to their vosition as hereinbefore described. The first his- torical dance is io be that of the Vikings, and each of the other courts will follow in turn after, each dance being called out by the sound of a bugle. The ledies and gentleman taking part in the historical dances have been practising for weeks pa-t,and had a rehearsal on Saturday night. Many of the dances are most un- iqne, and bring before the eyes of the ob- server the mauuers and styles of the past four centuries. The expense that has been incurred in preparing for this fune - tion is something enormous. The in- siructors for the several daaces charged $10 for lessons. The costumers charge from $10 to $20 for the hire of the cos- tumes, and, besides, many ladies have spent hundreds of dollars im get- ting up their own. The several courts are to be presented to His Excellen- cy and Ledy Aberdeen and then the state lancers will be danced, after which the Vice Regal Court will lead the procession to the supper room. After supper has been enjoyed the ordinary dances of pre- sent society will be indulged in. It is said thot this ball will be the most gor- geo’ s spectacle seen in Canada since Lord Dufferin was Governor General, and in many respects this function will exceed anything of that time.
The next great social event is the Albani Concert on Tuesday night. The

Macdonaid will at- tend as General Brock, one of the heroes of Canada in the war of 1812. The ap proach of Lent will put an end to the gai- eves that have been so frequent this ses- sicn. All this gaivty is not without benefit to the city; especially to the merchants; who have done a rush- ing business since Parliament opened.
Talking with an Ontario farmer the other day the interesting fact was elicited, that in that province, where they have had Liberal Provincial Government for over twenty years, the taxation fur local and provincial purposes on a 100 acre farm valued at $46 per acre, amounted to $73. This is what may be expected by P, E. Island farmers if they continue to support the Peters Government which has already introduced the thin edge of the wedge, and will soon be driving it
home.

A Hot Place.
The - hottest region on the earth’s sur- face is on the southwestern coast of Per- sia, on the border of the Persian gulf,
For forty consecutive days in the months of July and August the mercury has been known to stand above 100 degrees in the shade night and day and to ran up as high as 130 degrees in the middle of At Bahrein, in the center of the most torrid part of this most torrid belt, as though it were nature's intention to make the place as unbearable as pos- silwe, water from wells is something un- known. Great shafts have been sunk to % depth of 100, 200, 309 and even 500 feet but always with the same result—ne water. This serious drawback notwith- standing, a comparatively numerous population contrives to live there, thanks to copious springs which burst forth from the bottom of the gulf more than a mile from the shore.
The water from these springs is obtain- ed in a most curious and novel manner, ‘‘Machadores’’ (divers), whose sole occu- pation is that of furnishing the people of Bahrein with the life-giving fluid, repeir to tnat portion of the gulf where ioe springs are situated and bring away with them hundreds of bags full of the water each day. The water of the gulf wheré the springs Surst forth is nearly 200 feet deep, but these machadores manage to fill their goat-skin sacks by diving to the bottom and holding the mouth of the bags over the fonatain jets—this, too, without allowing the salt water of the gulf to mix with.it. The source of these submarine fountains is thought to be in the hills of Osmond, 400 ce 500 miles away. Being situated at the bottom of the gulf it isa mystery how they were ever discovered, byt the fact remains that they have been known since the dawn of history.
Queer Cats,
Crossing a female Manx cat with an ordinary tom cat has had results of sur- prising mathematical accuracy. The mother had six litters of three kittens each; in the first they were all tailless, in the second two were without tails, while one had a half tall; the third time only one was tailless, and two had half tails; with the fourth litter there were more taillese kittens, but two had half tails and one a full tail; in the fifth the pro- portions were reversed, one having a half tail and one two fuel tails, while in the sixth litter ail the kittens had fuil tails “The gradual elimination of the tailless condiiion characteristic of Manx cats,”’ says Nature, ‘‘is singular, and well worth putting on record,’’
