Tue Preeabyterian Char ch at Belfast has been closed daring the past few weeks. A new pulpit and new pews have been placed in it, and other improvements made upon it. It will be re-opened for public worship on the 21st inst.

Poor Fisuise,.- There has been rather poor fishing along the eastern coast of the island forthe last week or so. Fishermen say there are lots of mackerel, but they refuse to take the hook. Slim catches and low prices cause our fishermes to feel more or lesa depressed,

Cattep.—The steamer Stanley called at Souris on Tuesday last to land one of her sailors who had become disabled by striking his foot against a sharp iron bar. He was taken to one of the boarding houses of the town and lodged for treatment.

From Hativax.—The steamer Premier, Captain Kelly, arrived from Halifax at three o'clock yesterday afternoor, bringing a general cargo and several passengers. She sailed on return via Summerside at six o'vlock the same evsning with a cargo of oats, lobsters, etc., and several pas- sengers.

Tue Fastyer—The steamer Fastnet ar- rived here this forencon with a gool cargo and the followiag passengers: Mra J A Weeks, Misses Mettles (2), Miss Batler, Mise Phelan, Mies Mclatyre, James Leclare, John McLeod, Neil Shaw, Mrs Coffia, A F Taylor, James Orman. The nine first named personages were taken frum the disabled steamer Wor- cester at Port Hawkesbury. The others came through on the Fastwet from Halifax, The Faatnet leaves on return to Halifax via Sum. merside at 4 e’cluck this afternoon.
Tae Circes —The tent of Washburn’s circus waa packed to its utmost capacity last evening by an audience that numbered about 3000 persons. The performance ie not alto- gether after the plan of the old fashioned ci:- cuses, wherein bareback riding, jamping through hoop* and equestrian feate make up the programme. The affair last night partook more of tne natare of a gymnastic exhibitior, The acrobats and othor performers io that line are first class. The wild west show is not so *“‘wild and woolly” as one would suppose, although the cowboys strung up a horse thief and filled him full of lead according to ap- proved fashion.

Sovrts Races —Ou the part of the sport- ing fraternity and the public generally, great disappointment was felt that Souris races could not take place on the ‘11th owing to the down-pour of rain that made the track unfit. Some of the best trotting horses on the Island and in the neighboring provinces as well were on the epot ready to test their speed, and it was admitted on all sides that had the trot taken place it would have been one of the
best ever held on the Island ‘The races were postponed till to-morrow (Friday) when the same horses, and a few additional ones, will enter the contest. purposes for which it was erected. It cost
the country nearly four theusand dollars to build it, aod now to allow it to fall into disuse for the want of a few dollars a year to main- tain it is simply indefensible on the part of
the Gove nment. At present sick sailors landed at that port have to be taken care of at boarding houses and in private families.
This, from a sanitary as well as a public standp vint, is not as it should be. It is hoped ,
therefore that the department at Ottawa will at once place this much neglected hospital on & proper footing.‘

Moncton, Aug: 18.
The Royal Prohibition Commission de- voted seven hours yesterday to its investi- gstion in this district, comprising several counties and probably 150,000 population. The apparent aim of the commission was rather to investigate the operation of the Scott Act than to get evidence of the local feeling for prohibition. Mr. Hawke, of the Transcript, repeated his stale charge that Judge Fraser had been intoxicated on the bench. The chairman said that the witness must be mistaken and that he would be obliged to report the matter to Judge Fraser. The Commission goes to P. E. I. today.
The British Ministry. Loypon, Aug. 18. The first meeting of the new Cabinet was held yesterday, Mr. Gladstone presiding. Gladstone will to-morrow accompany the new Ministers to Osborne House, the Queen’s residence on the Isle of Wight.

The shooting by the Provincial rifle as- sociation at Bedford yesterday was of a high order. Good scores were made. In the battalion match, the 93rd team from Cumberland were victorious.

Fatal Fire.
Lonpon, Aug, 18. Eleven persons perished yesterday in a model lodging house in Lion Square, Tra- falgar. Nine bodies were recovered. ;

Geography is not Against Us.
Toronto News.
Nothing could be more utterly untrue than this parrott-like cry that geography is against the creation of a Canadian nation. The Dom:nion is not *‘a mere fringe” along the northern frontier of the adjoining Republic, nor does it bear evidence of be- ing designed for a tier of Northern States Certainly Canada is broader from east to west than it is in depth from north to south. But because this is so the assump- tion is not necessarily warranted that our natural destiny is to form the complement of the United States.
Take each province singly and it is seen at a glance how fallacious this ‘‘fringe tier” argument is. There is not a single member of confederation that is not aa large and compact as the average nation of Europe. Even Nova Scotia has an area six thousand miles greater than Denmark; British Qolumbia exceeds Austro-Hungary by forty two thovsand miles; and Ontario, as compact as any state in Europe in propor- tion to siza, exceeds France by fifteen thousand square miles. Surely all these mighty provinces—each a nation ia itself— are not weakened by being united in one confederation, and if they are not then the truth of the declaration with which this article begins must ba admitted—that yeography and nature are not at war with he upbuilding of a Canadian nation.
