Tue first practice of the Charlottetown Philharmonic Society will be held in the Y. M. C. A. Hall on Thursday, the Sth inst., at 8 o'clock, p. m., sharp. Any lady or gentle- man not having been waited on by the com- mittee or Mr. Earle, will please attend the meeting.

Tue Pair-ot recently made a reckless and unwarrantable statement in reference to the Hor. Mr. Campbell and Mr. Cash. Mr. Cash denies the statement over his own signa- ture; but the Patriot has the impertinence to repeat it in a qualified way. The Patriot will not do justice to anyone in the Government ; but it seems to be particularly unjust to Mr. Campbell.

YEsTERDAY afternoon a man named George Young went on board the brigantine William, in Georgetown, and attacked Captain Nichol- son in a violent manner. The Captain de- fended himself as well as possible, but finding his assailant increasing in violence, he drew a small knife and stabbed Young behind the ear, inflicting an ugly wound. Young was mate of the William last fall, and the row originated in some disagreement he then had with the Captain.

London Spectator, shows that he is perfectly at one with his old colleagues on the National Policy. ‘The veteran statesman enters upon an elaborate defence of the underlying principle of the new tariff, and shows, at some length, that the clamour raised against it in England is unjust and unreasonable, even from English free trade point of view.

Rev. Dr. Turrsr, of Aylesford, N.S., father of the Minister of Public Works, who is now over 90 years of age, a few Sundays ago har- nessed his own horse, drove four miles, and

hed in the morning and evening, return- ing to his home on the following day. It is the rev. gentlemen’s intention, accompanied by his wife, to pay a visit to his friends at Avondale during the early part of this month. Avondale is about 70 miles from Aylesford, aud he intends to drive the whole distance there and back. The doctor is still remark- ably hale for his great age.

A Mercuant SENTENCED To Pena Servi- tupe. —‘* At the Birmingham, Borough Session, yesterday, William S.. Lyons, leather mer- chant and agent, was found guilty of receiving, and knowing the same to have been stolen, £300 worth of boots, belonging to Messrs. H. Smith & Co., wholesale leather manufactures, and was sentenced to six years’ penal ser- vitude.” A correspondent sends us the above, with the remark that were justice dis-

msed in this country in the same manner as it is measured out in England, we should soon have a better state of alfairs.— Montreal Star.

AN exciting scene was witnessed on Sunday morning at the foot of 125th street and Har- lem river, New York, the occasion being the baptism of twenty-four coloured men and women by immersion in the river. Over 1,500 spectators were present. The ceremony was commenced by singing hyms, after which fourteen females between the ages of sixteen and 60 were duly baptized. Several of the women became very excited during the cere- mony, and it was with great difficulty that several of them were restrained from plunging into the river again.

A MEETING of acquatic oe relative to the championship of England, was held at Newcastle (Eng.), on Monday night last. Col. Shaw, Hanlan’s Canadian backer; Wallace Ross, Plaisted and others were present. A telegram from the Marquis of Lorne, congratu- lating Hanlan, was read. Articles were then signed between Hanlan and Elliott to row on the Tyne championship course, June 16, for £206 aside, the championship of England, and the Sportsman challenge cup: half the stakes to be deposited, the remainder payable June 10. At the close of-the meeting, various sums were offered on Hanlan, who was a strong favorite at 5to 4. During the meeting, Chris- topher Barrass offered to back Robert Boyd to row Ross on the Tyne for £100 to £500 a side. Ross declined this, but said he was anxious to row Boyd. if he could ob- tain the assent of his London backers. Mr. Sterling, of Canada, offered to stake £1,000 for Hanlan to row Roas on Toronto Bay, Ross to stake £600. He further said that if Boyd would. visit Canada, Hanlan would row him and all his expenses be de- frayed. The following challenges were an- nounced : Hawdon offers to row Kempster, of Sanderland, and Boyd, a match each on the Tyne, for £100 a side; or Hawdon will take ten seconds start over the same course from any manin the world, or six seconds start from any man, barring Hanlan.

Toronto; May 6. At a mass meeting held here this evening resolutions were adopted favoring the establishment of a National currency for the development of public works, such cur- rency to be legal tender for all debts in the Dominion. MontrREAL, May 6.

The movement in Parliament to repeal the Insolvent Law is exciting a goed deal of interest here. Opinions are generally in favor of the action taken by the House. One hundred and sixteen children, under the care of Mrs. Birt, arrived yesterday from England.

STRATFORD, Ont., May 6.

The inquest on Dolan and Pigeon, vic- tims of the dynamite explosion of yester- day, will be continued to-morrow. Haw- kins, Who was wounded, is not expected to live. The others are convalescent. One hundred and twenty-five cars were damaged in all; 25 were entirely demolished, 50 shiverea to the trucks, and 50 more er less injured. The scene has been examined by G. T. Railway officials from Montreal, and measures are being taken to discover the precise nature of the explosive, and who shipped it. Winnipre, May 6. One thousand men have struck on Mr. Whitehead’s section on the Canada Pacific Railway. Cause; a reduction of wages from $2 te $1 75 and $150 per day, and also bad board. The menare determined to hold out and intend seizing the works. The local volunteers have been ordered to the scene of the trouble. Cuicaco, May 6.

Gray, who attempted to shoot Edwin Beoth, pleaded guilty to assault with intent to kill, to-day, and was remanded for sen- tence. Inquiry into the mental condition of the prisoner will be made.
