A SLAVE TO DUTY.

An Elephant That Would Not Neglect a Baby It Was Caring For.

Marie A. Millie, in St. Nicholas, tells a number of ‘‘Stories of Elephants.’’ Mrs. Millie says:

Some time before the elephant hunt I have described my husband was at a station in Bengal. His work kept him out nearly all day, and, being ill, I used to lie for hours ina long garden chair on the veranda, too weak to read or enjoy any more exciting amusement than my eyes supplied to me.

We had three elephants for our tents and baggage, and one dear creature used to feed from my hands every day end seemed as gentle as auy pet dog or cat.

One of our government chaprasis was particularly devoted to her and invari- ably shared his meal of fruit or flour cakes with his dumb friend. On a par- ticularly hot day the chaprasi, to my surprise, placed his tiny child of 6 months at the elephant’s feet, warning her expressively that the infant was in her charge and was to be cared for tiil his return. I myself was an eyewitness of her wonderful sagacity. Large nana tree; aud fig trees grew around, and, to my surprise, the elephant broke off one of the former's spreading leaves, held it like a fan in her trunk and from time to time gracefully waved it over the slumbering child, whether to tem- per the heat of the atmosphere or to keep off flies, Iam unable to say. The gentle way in which she moved her feet over the child and across to each side astounded me. I sent for a white loaf and some oranges, and, calling her by name (she was never chained), tried in vain to tempt her to my side on the low veranda. Nothing would induce her to leave her charge. The warm air and monotonous wave of the swinging fan overpowered me with drowsiness, to which I yielded, and, after a sleep of some duration, I was awakened by quiet, subdued suorts beside me To my surprise I found that the chaprasi had just returned to his offspring, and the elephant stood near the veranda be- side me, patiently waiting and gently usking for the tempting dainties so bravely withstood for over two hours.

A Timorous Barnard Student Never Knew It Till She Had “Passed.”

One of the brightest and incidentally the prettiest girls in Barnard college was also the most nervous at least at examina- tion. Her affliction, not apparent ordi- narily, rendered her miserably hopeless then. She was bound to stumble and fall over the simplest questions, and she knew it. She despised herself for it. As the

increasing contempt until she felt she was not worthy to live.

At Barnard she was preparing herself for a professorship in mineralogy and geol ogy. She had done brilliant work througb the year, both in laboratory and in recita- tions, so that those of her classmates who did not know of her weakness predicted certain honors for her. But the hideous finals were upon her and she was in de spair.

The examination was to be oral and public, and to complete ber agony they would be conducted by a Harvard profess- or, who was coming on for that especia} purpose. A friend of hers in Barnard knew this professor and met him on his arrival. of her brilliant friend.

On the morning of the fatal day, some three hours before the finals were to begin,

The older of the young women excused herself, having an engagement, but the younger said she woud be only too happy. The honor was more than grateful, she said, for it would allow her to forget the torture in store for her. She took the pro- fessor all over the building, which was perfectly familiar to her. He asked her raany questions, which she answered with wonderful accuracy, growing enthusiastic as she proceeded and ta.king brilliancy on her hobby.

Not a Bit Like a Man,

I must tell you of something which hap- pened less than a month ago. Several young women had been invited to attend a@ young companion on the occasion of her marriage, anda few days before, or per- haps only one day before, the ceremony a married kinswoman of the bride elect gave them alla breakfast. The married kins-

tertaining feature of the affair she arrang- ed a list of toasts. A girl from New York acted as toastmaster. She was almost an utter stranger to the other guests, but she made an exceedingly witty speech. In closing it she said:

**T shall ask Miss Blank to respond to the first sentiment, a sentiment which I mm sare she will deal with earnestly and with feeling. Miss Blank, I give you,

‘Why I Prefer Single Blessedness.’ ”’

Everybody turned pale. Miss Blank flushed painfully, half rose from her chair, tried to speak, and then, to the New York girl’s utter astonishment, she burst into tears and ran outof the room. The New York girl found out later that Miss Blank nad once been betrothed to a western gen- tleman who had eloped with one of her friends almost on the eve of her wedding day. The New York girl was so angry at tho hostess for putting her in the way of making such a false step that she took the next train home, and her place in the bridal procession was ¢mpty.— Wrchrgton Post,

A Parisian Puzzle.

During tho last few weeks the Paris postal officials have been troubled with many letters which they find it impossible to deliver. They are all in one handwrit- ing and are addressed for the most part to celebrated personages who have long sinee passed beyond the reach of earthly corre- spondence. One envelope bears the in- scription, ‘“‘M. le Marechal de Saxe, a Paris,’ and there is added the direction, “In easo of absence forward immediately to the seat of war.’’ Another Ictter is ad- dressed to ‘*M. Corneilic, to the good care of his majesty, in Paris.’’ The most ex- traordinary thing about the letters is their contents. All ask the question, ‘* What in- fluence do you think the employment of automobile cabs will exercise on contem-
