It should give us all a thrill as we see the number of men and women who would have been so handicapped by illness, accidents or war wounds that they might not be able to earn even a partial liv- ing. restored to complete health or to a degree of health that enables

For years we have watched Workmen's Compensation Boards do all that is possible to restore the injured workman to health suffic- ient to return to his old occupa- tion or a lighter one. For this ser- vice the employer and the govern- ment furnish the funds.

Then there is the wounded or in- jured member of the armed forces who, afte rhaving his health rc- stored insofar as this is possible by our military hospitals, then re- ceives treatment for any handicap such as a lost arm or leg. weakened lungs or heart or other defect, and during or immediately following this is taught a new occupation or trade for which he is fitted.

In a paper read last June before the Section of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the 101st Annual Session of the American Medical Association, Dr. Howard A. Rush, of New York, reported that there were 476 patients discharged from the physical medicine and re- habilitation services from the four hospitals connected with New York University-Bellevue Medical Center. Of this group. 342 lived within 25 miles oP New York City. There wasi no objection to the match, no lack of money since the daughter was sent through college, and she stepped into a home fully furnished by the groom. The task of collecting a girl's trousseau is no longer the responsibility of the parents, as it. was in time past. Today, when most girls do work for a time before marriage, and when the high cost of living makes the education of a daughter quite a financial drain on the family budget, young people themselves have taken over the job of furnishing the required items for setting up housekeeping. The family of the girl to whom you refer (and I bet you're on the in-law side of the fence) undoubtedly did incur considerable expense in giving, the daughter a college educatlonvwhich is a much greater asset to bring in marriage than a few fripperies. Since the girl married immediately upon graduating, she certainly realized, as did her fiance, that there would be no money earned for a trousseau. Certainly. she had no cause for humiliation at the lack of one.
