Chief Justice Wallbridge’s Opinion. Winnipec, May 18.

Chief Justice Wallbridge has given the pinion that according to law, Riel must be tried iu the District of Saskatchewan where | he was captured. He could not be brought to Winnipeg or Ottawa. The Dominion Government might, however, issue a special

commission and send up judges to try him unde the present act. Tao judicial authorities in Saskatchewan have power to try a man

for his life, but an appeal to the Manitoba Beuch is provided for. He covid not be tried by court martial under the circum- stances.

Gun. Middleton, it will be remembered, promised in a letter to Riel that he would le protected until the Dominion Govern- meat decided on his case.
