fatal —assauit was last night committed on the person of an inoffensive young man named Joseph MeKinnon, by a miscreant named Frederick Davy—a fellow who has done more to disgrace a respectable family than volumes can contain. Davy resides on Fitzroy street and is married to a widow .-who in his alysence keeps a house of ques- tionable repute. The victim lives a few doors east of Davy’s.

Last night he was returning home about aine o'clock. When at the corner of Fitz- roy and Queen streets he heard a distur- bance at Davy’s, and as he approached, three persons, who appeared strangers to him, beat a quick retreat from the door and disappeared from view on the north side of the street. Davy quickly followed carrying

with him a heavy potato-masher. Meeting McKinnon, and no doubt thinking

he was one of the party who ran from the door, he —with the beetle—dealt him a violent blow on the back of the skull, in- flicting a ghastly wound. The young man fell insensible to the ground, and it is sup- posed while lying insensible, his assailant continued to prosecute the brutal assault. When found he was writhing in his blood; his body was bruised, and the flesh of his arms cut and skinned. He was carried to his home, where he lay in a critical condi- tion for some time. During the night he regained strength to state the facts of the assault as above. At noon to-day he be- came feverish. His parents, becoming alarmed for his recovery, summoned the 2ay, N.C. Bondrault, who prepared the un- fortunate young man fer death. it is the opinion of Dr. Creamer, who has been in attendance, that he will sink into a state of deleriousness, as the brain is evidently ef- fected by the blow.

When Davy recovered from his violent passion and discevered what he did he fled to parts unknown. He returned

home to-day and was found this evening} | a

concealed in the cellar of his house.

Highway Robbery. A COUNTEYMAN’S POCKETS RIFLED.

Yesterday evening, shortly after dusk, a verdant looking countryman was proceeding along King street. He was a little over the bay, and his appearance denoted that he would be a soft take for rifiers. At the south side of the Bishop’s Palace he was set upon by three well-known corner loafers from the East End, who, inan instant, caught his arms, stopped his mouth and relieved his sockets of a purse containing $3. He com plained of the robbery at the police station, but as yet the robbers have not been ar-

rested.

Obituary.

Mr. Wiuuam Wetsu, printer, of this City, died suddenly at Alberton yesterday. in the office of

the late Hon. Edward Whelan. Leaving the Island for the United States shortly after, he joined the Federal Army, in which he held the position of first sergeant of his regiment for some time, and from which he received an honorable discharge. After his return to the Island he for some years held the position of foreman in the Progress office, Summerside. At the time of his death he was employed as foreman in the office of the Alberton Pioneer. He was a general favorite with his fellow- craftsmen, on account of his quiet and unas. suming disposition. A dispatch from Khost says that General Roberts had no sooner evacuated Malvind the capital of Khost Afghanistan, than it was surrounded by thousands of Mangols. The British returned and received the chief whom they had left in authority, burned the fort and returned to camp. In their retreat they were harassed by Mangols. §

General Roberts has abandoned Khosta for | the present, as he is convinced that such dis- | turbances will be incessant.

The Paris despatch says that, at the Cabinet | Council on Thursday morning, the Ministers | offered to resign if President McMahon thought he could come to a compromise with the Chambers.

Suffering Among the Glasgow Poor A special cable dispatch from London to the Mail says: —‘‘Advices from Glasgow state that there is a fearful amount of destitution exist- ing in that city, and applications for relief are on the increase. There are also many skilled workmen out of employment, who are subsist- ing on their last savings, or on money received from beneiit societies and trades unions, as well as other temporary expedients. Advices from Manchester, Salford, - Birmingham, Burnley, Merthyr, South Durham, Southport Wolverhampton state that the unprece- dented distress in those localities continues to increase, and is attributed to the prolonged severe weather, the stagnation in the iron trade, the extreme dullness in most branches of the coaland coke trade, the depression in other trades and the notices to workmen. Many of these notices were issued to bring about reductions in wages. Hundreds of of families are on the verge of starvation, and the workhouses are full to overflowing. Charitable societies are hard at work, and collecting boxes have been placed in many places of business and public resort.”’ . oo Wo has charge of the City pumps?
