A Picturesque Canvass.

HOW THE CAMPAIGN IN WOODSTOCK WAS CON- DUCTED BY THE LADIES,

The most picturesque canvass for par liamentary election that has been made in England for a long time was in progress at Woodstock over the question whether Lord Randolph Churchiil should be re- elected or should give way to Mr. Corrie Grant, the young lawyer whom the Liberals gent down from London to oppose him. It was a ladies’ battle on both sides, The campaign was begun by Lady Randolph Churchill last Saturday evening by driving a tandem team through the main streets of the picturesque old town, with the skill and grace to be expected of the daughter of the founder of Jerome Park. The Liberals quickly resolved to meet their fair adversary on her own grounds, and secured the ser- vices of Misses King and Adams, two lovely young graduates from Oxford. The de- lightful canvassing of the girl graduates soon captured the populace, and the Tories began to give way. Lady Randolph Churchill lost none of her courage and energy, but saw that something must be done to offaet the influence of the pretty girls from Oxford, and she summoned rein- forcements. lieutenants, Lady Evelyn and Lady Edith Curren, young daughters of Lord Howe, snd sent them forth to dazzle the electors. The latter got more and sweeter blandish- ments than they ever dreamed of before, and were in a dilemma asto which of their suitors to favor. The result was Lord

Fearful Rate of Mortality.

The vital statistics of London show a fearful rate of mortality among insured infants, The books of the insurance com- panies show that the death rate among _in- fants who are, insured is much greater than the general death rate for the same ages as published in the government reports. The latter includes both the insured and the uninsured infants. If the two classes could be separated in the official reports so that they could be compared, it is believed it would be shown that the mortality among the insured is 50 per cent. greater than that among the uninsured. These facts strengthen the suspicion into conviction that many infants are deliber- ately murdered for the sake of the insur- anca on their lives. Medical and legal newspapers are imploring parliament to devise some remedy for the growing and horrible evil.
