Some Fundamental Truths Spoken by the Governor of One of the Southern States --Hls Remarks, However, Are Apropos The World Over,
Governor Northern has a very sensible article in the Southern Cultivator on the subject of brains on the farm. Governor Northern tes us of an eminent lawyer who, as the ruult of experience on the farm, arrived at the conclusion that it tovk more brains to manage his farm than to manage his law office, for he succseded best in law. This, our distinguished writer concludes, was rather a mauiter of aptiti- than a matter of brains. After soine Wiscussion of the question he says:
‘It is a great mistake to adopt the gen- erally received opinion that any man can successfully farm if he will only stick at it and put into it plenty of elbow grease and personal sweat. I do not believe this to be any bearer the truth than that any man of ordinary intelligence can practice physic carefully simply because he stays steadily beside the bedside of his patient and industriously administers medicine atevery apparent change of symptom.
‘“‘Just so longas we believe and practice the belief that any stupid dolt that never had an orfginal idea in his life and has given evidence of no higher capacity than to hold a plow and beat and ctarve a mule, will make a good enough farmer to till our lands and make our material wealth, just so long will we invite ruin to our agricultute and desolation for the best interest of our sections. We must away with such suicidal practices and put more brains on our farms.. Let muscle do the work, but intelligence direc. the management and the methods. ’’ Governor Northern brings out a great fundamental truth in the following sen- tence;
“In the soil God has given an inherit- ance not exclusively to the generation that now butchers it on our farms, but to generation after generation to follow, and we have no more right to turn loose upon it such savage slaughter than allow hordes of quack doctors to become un- restrained vendors of poisons to the des- truction of human life.’’
There are few more pitiable industrial spectacles than that of a farmer reducing the fertility and character of his farm. Tt is a standing advertisement of his mental incapacity and sluggishness and his entire failure to seize upon the grand fact ofa very plain fundamental obliga- tion of life. One who is satisfied to leaye the world poorer than he found it has not the ring of true manhood in him. The whole class of soil robbers and farm dis- poilers are not only, as Prof. Robertson concludes, traitors to their country, but they are more—they are traitors to nature and to their God. We want a race of men and women on the farm far above the low ideal of agriculture that goyerns
many farmers. is
Physical Culture.
In walking the hoel should not be brought down too firmly. A part of the weight of the body belongs upon the toes, and when a due proportion is thrown there it gives an elasticity to the gait which is lost when it is not properly dis- tributed. Walking with the heels raised from the ground is a good exercise al- though a fatiguing one. Hopping on each foot alternately is another. Dancing isa valuable accomplishment for children. The consciousness of being able to dance well gives ease and self possession to many & young man and woman who were otherwise bashful and awkward on their first entrance into society. The little people usually delight in the rhythmical motion, andif it is not combined with late hours it does them nothing but good, says a write? in the Ladies’ Home Jour- nal, who ads:
All outdoor games that involve running and active movement of any kind are use- ful adjuncts in physical development. An immense amount of exercise is taken under the guise of diversion. Battledoor and shuttlecock, which was long a favor- ite amusement. is a capital indoor game where there is room to play it and might be revived with advantagte. Bean bags, colored bags filled with beans and aimed at a ring or other mark, and the form of quoits played on shipboard with rings of rope may be utilized to furnish exercise on rainy days. Especial attention should be paid to ventilation when the children are exercising indoors. The respiration is quickened, the lungs demand more air, and there should be a plentiful supply of oxygen to meet it.
Uses of Beef.
In an interview a large foreign shipper of dressed beef makes a statement which is not entirely in accordance with the facts. This meat exporter, who sends weekly to England thousands of carcasses, explains the fact that the choice cuts of beef may be purchased abroad at a low- er price than with us by saying that here every one demands the choice portions, and consequently three-fourths of the ani- mal raust be sold at actual cost or even below it. All the butcher’s profit must therefore come from the remaining one fourth. In England, on the other hand, every part of the beef is in demand and sells at a good price, which enables the choice cuts to be disposed of at a lower price than with us. His explanation of this is that the English understand far better than we do how to cook in a tempt- ing way even the rough meat. While this explanation would twenty years ago have been plausible, it is not so at the present time. The demand in this country for every part of a dressed beef is as great as in any other nation. This has come about through the large accession to our population of people of the Latin race, who have a thorough knowledge of how to utilize even the most indifferent por- ions of a slaughtered animal. The reason why foreigners are able to purchase our beef at a less price than ourselves is that they do not have to contribute to the pro- fits of jobbers or middlemen. While the prices of all other commodities have fallen largely, that of meat remains at a max- mum figure.

ANOTHER GLACIAL PERIOD.
Geologists Think the World May Be Fro- zen Up Again
The question is again being discussed whether recent and long continued ob- servations do not point to the event of a second glacial period, when the countries
now basking in the fostering warmth of & tropical sun will ultimately give way to the perennial frost and snow of the polar regions. The researches of ¢colog! have proved the existence of Greenland and other arctic lands of fossil palms and the tropical plants,which shows that these regions were once covered with a rich vegetation, which only equatorial climes can now produce.
Then came the great age. which buried this vegetation beneath the mantle of cold which still prevails at the polar ex- tremities of the earth. Is this kingdow of ice and snow again extending its sway toward the equator? From the arctic cir- cles we have no data which supply ap answer to the question, but it is asserted that the climate of Norway, Sweden and Iceland is annually becoming more severe. Great inasses of ice are frequently observ- ed by navigators in far more southerly position during the summer months i: the Atlantic than was the case a fev years ago, and the effect of these iceberg was to materially reduce the temperatur of Scandinavia and Iceland. Tue iatic: island in late years has been suffering severely that corn no longer ripens there, and the inhabitants, in fear of approach ang famine and a still colder climate, are emigrating to North America.
The influence of the gulf stream on the climate of Norway, which has net beer less marked than its effects on the coasi: of Ireland and Scotland, is being effaced by the intensity of the cold brought bs the masses of ice which it is for the gul: stream to carry toward the eastern sic) of the north Atlantic. This extraordinary cold appears, however, to be rather a peri- odical occurrence than of gradually anc annually increasing in intensity, and the existence of larger quantities of ice than usual in the Atlantic rather points warmer weather in the polar regions tha: to an unusually intensely and extension of the region of the polar eold. The au nals of history show that from time t time since the advent of man into th world remarkable rigid winters and torri: summers have upset the calculations oi learned geologists and ruffled the equani:n ity of the inhabitants of the temperat: zones. Several times the frost king ha been known to come down from 1: heights of Europe and seal the water of the Adriatic. In 860 and 1234 the ic formed a secure bridge from Venice to th: opposite Dalmatian coast, and in 1709 th Adriatic was completely covered with ice All the rivers in France were frozen ii the years 1305 and 1364, the ice on the river Rhone being in some places 15 foe: thick. The winter of 1788-9 was rigorou- throughout Europe. The Atlantic frox along its coast to a distance of severr] leagues, and vessels were unable to ap proach within some miles of Ostend, ii Belgium, a port that ordinarily is ope: throughout the year. The winter of 1812 18 is memorable for its extreme degree o: cold. In the winter of 1851-2 the Susquehanna river at Havre be Grace, Md., was frozen so hard that trains of the Philadephia, Wilmington and Baltimore railroad rai over it. When Dr. Johnston had defined oats ar a ‘‘grain which in England is generally; given to horses, but in Scotland support: the peopie,’’ Lord EKlibank triumphantiy retorted, ‘‘But where will you find such horses and such men?’ We may admir. the patrioti8m but we must regret th« loyal mendacity of his lordship, for he must have known how dirty, slow and slovenly his rural countrymen were.
The food of the people was poor, for they had nothing tv cook except cat ant barley meal and greens from their yard, for no other vegetables were known, am beef or mutton they seldom saw, and pigs’ flesh they would not eat if they had it. Their drink was fermented whey, kepi fora year in barrels, or ale made fron oats and heather. Milk they rarely had, for the meagre cows provided only two or three pints a day, and that was kept sour from being in foul dishes.
So averse were the people to cleanliness that the butter owed its consistency to the number of cows’ hairs in it and was churned in kirns, which were kept filthy because it was ‘‘uncanny’’ to wash theia. The men clad in their rugged. home wov- en plaiding coat, with shirts change twice a year—at Martinmas and Whit Sunday—and feet without shoes, save on Sabbath and in winter snow, were mis erably dirty, and their skin hard and withered from exposure outside and the peat reek indoors and subject to the ob- noxious diseases that diré alone engend- ers.—Scottish Review.

By jove,’’ he concluded, striding up and down the room, ‘‘do you know that last week I gave a handsomely printed copy

and as sure as you are alive she looked over ita moment and exclaimed: ‘Oh, isn’t it charming? Did you write it?
