But information from the country tends to the conclusion that all the factories will receive & much larger supply of milk this year than lact. Weare informed by one farmer that whereas he, last year, sent to the factory the milk of twenty-one cows, he will send this year the milk of thirty cows. Other farmers of whom we have heard will this year double the number of cows from which they draw their supplies to the factory. Improved breeds of cattle and better feeding are also beginning to tell in the supply of milk. Altogether we feel safe in assuring the Government that amuch beiter result will be ebtained in the present season than in any of those that are past.

Under these circumstances it is pleasing to learn that the Government have not taken the action that was threatened. The telegram published in another column ccn- veysthe gratifying information tliat all the factories—old and new-~-wil] be man- aged this year under the superintendence of the Department of Agriculture and its officials. We have no doubt that this de Cision was reached in the certain prospect of increased milk. The Government have begun a beneficent work in the establishment of the dairy industry, and we trust that they will not hold their hands until it has been accomplished,or at least so far advanced that disaster will not be likely io overtake the enterprise.

In the meantime our farmers must learn to co-operate cordially and not to set up two or three factories in a district which supplies sufficient milk for ouly one.

The April report of the Statistican of United States gives some interesting in regard to the extent to which iat country imports potatoes. The sta- tistics cover a period of 10 years. It ap- pears from them that during the ten-year period ending June 30, 1894, there were mported into that country 29,495,417 bu-hels of potatoes with an aggregate val- ne of $13,155,431, or an avearge of 44.6c. per bushels. The net excess of imports over exports for the same period was 24,- 347,405 bushels, with a value of $9,296,- 245. During the year 1892 that the coun- try raised the largest crop but one during the period above mentioned, the crop being 202,385,000 bushels. During the same year it imported eight and a quarted mil- ion bushels of potatoes. That the United States should go abroad to buy potatoes or any other farm product is a matter of sur- prise to the Agricultural Department, but statistics that cannot be denied show that luring the ten years just passed almost ten willion dollars have gone abroad to buy potatoes.

Mr Houston Doucette, the contractor for the building of a bridge on the new road which is being opened between the Hunter River and St Mary’s roads, is now engaged upon the work. Mr W D McCoubrey in- spects the job.

The Northern Branch Society of the Farmers’ and Dairymen’s Association will close their meetings for the season by hold- ing a public meeting in the New Glasgow Hal! on Monday evening, 29th inst.

Messrs W H McKie and J H Stevenson of the Bank of Nova Scotia, Charlottetown, spent their Easter holidays here.

Messrs Hill & Stevenson have been en- geged in renovating their building and machinery to afford themselves better facilities to meet the wants of their cus- tomers.

THE MEDICAL ACT. Sir,—I see that the amendment Medical Act that was introduced has been rejected. The question is often asked, “Show was this act placed on our statute book? Was it asked for by a public petition.” We answer no. The doctors were the only persons who asked for i and our law makers could not refuse when such an intelligent body ef men asked for it! Who was in power when this act of 1892 was passed ? The Liberal party led by Mr. Frederik Peters. Who was the party that deprived the public of the right of doing with their own what they pleased, as long as they did not interfere with the rights and privileges enjoyed by other people? The Liberal party led by Mr. Peters. Who gave the fines collected from prosecutions by this act to the Medi cal Couacil? Any person can be prosecu cor under this act. Should the prosecu- tor gain the case the Medical Council re cover the fine. But should he lose the case he has to pay the expenses out of his own pocket. This is Justice with a ven- geance; and the law was passed by this Liberal party led by Mr. Peters. What party prohibited any but registered or liceused men from practicing medicine for hire, gain or hope of reward, but etill al- lowed unregistered men to practice if they made nocharge? If the public were in danger from those unregistered men if they made a charge,were they not as much in danger if they practiced without charge ? But this is what we may expat by having such men in power as we haveet present. Who passed the clanse that no person could be appointed as medical officer, physician or surgeon in any branch of the public service of this Provice, or in any hospital or other charitable institution, un- less he is registered? No matter though he is otherwise authorized as a doctor, he is prohibited from being appointed unless he is registered. So great is this Medica! combine that has been created by those wonderful so-called Liberals that are never tired of crying out “combine” at every public meeting that they attend and though the press, that they remind one of the thief that cried owt “stop the thief,” to divert the people’s attention from him- self. So it is with this wonderful Liberal party led by Frederick Peters. What ac- tion did the Conservative Government take when this bill was brought before them ? The high hills of Orwe)] are now almost rid of their snowy burden, and the steam- ing land and sparkling river present a truly truly summer-like appearance.

The mud on the roads nowhere exceeds the depth of three feet, and yet our home- loving people prefer not to traffic on the velvety ways.

A cheese factory is being erected here, undor the direction of the Orwell Dairy- ing Association. This will be another prop to the cheese industry; we wish the enterprising promoters of it every success.

Our merchants—Stevens, Clarke and McLeod—are making the necessary pre- paraticns for a lively summer’s trade.

Orwellers were never better satisfied with the condition of their school than at prasent, and may well congratulate them-— selves on securing such a teacher as Mr. J.S. O'Neill. Mr. O’Neill knows hie duty aud invariably performs. it.

Report of the Prohibition Com- mission.

Anticipations Concerning Prohibition lleusory.

The report of the Prohibition Commis- mission was presented yesterday, It isa voluminous document. The Commission- ers summarize their work as follows : The enactment of a prohibition law forthe who'e Dominion would, in the opinion of the undersigned prejudicially affect the busi- ness, industrial and commercial interest of the country. The effect of the law on the Federal, Provincial and Municipai rev- enues from the prohibition of the traffic would be to practically wipe them out. The option conferred under the Scott Act, it can only be remarked, still remains the law of the country. Itis the nearest ap- proach to a general prohibition system that has been attempted; and that act has been repealed in 52 per cent. of the counties and cities which originaliy adopted it, and no new district has put the act in force since 1886. With the powers possessed by the various provinces to legislate in respect to the traffic, the certainty that in some of the provinces prohibition would meet with determined opposition with an open frontier such as the Dominion possesses, largely bordering onthe United States, in which the sale would be carried on, the undersigned con- sider that it is illusory to anticipate that a general prohibitory law could be enforced with any reasonable degree of efficieucy.

Yesterday was private members’ day in the House of Commons.

Replying to Mr. Perry Hon. Mr. Foster said that no borings were now in progress on the Northumberland Straits, but that negotiations were now in progress to have the work resumed.

Hon. Mr. Costigan answering Mr. Perry said that the Governmeat had not extend- ed the time for the payment of the lobster fishing fees.

On the 19th inst commnnications were sent Mr Dillon authorizing him to inform the presidents of the cheese factories in Prince Edward I-land, old and new, that the Dairy Commissioner will manage the factories in 1895 on simil»r terms to those of 1894, with the difference that the rents paid shall not exceed five per cent of the cost of the factories. . This arrangement will absorb one-fifth of the total amount appropriated for dairying services in the Dominion.
