The decision of tile House of Commons is much to be regretted. and it is to be hoped that the Government will reconsich their policy on this question. Mr. Bright does not contend for immediate repeal of the Union between Canada alld N ova Sco- tia. but for inquiry by an ilnpartial com- mission, which is no very great boon to grant. The least tlle House could do would be to inquire into the alleged grie- vances, in the hope that the enquiry itself might have a soothing effect, and probably lead the way to an amicable settlement.

However advantageous to the intcresh of England a. union of the British Ameri- can Provinces might be, no consideration of English advantage or English vanitv should lead us to use force ill constraining colonial populations, or to deny tllcm those rights of Sl'lf‘gOVeIllllICllt which we have ever claimed for ourselves. It. is diflicull to exaggerate the importance oftllc ques- tioll at issue, involving as it does not only the permanence of the North American Confederation, the formation of which was hailed with so much satisfaction, but the probable duty alld position of the mother country in case a rupttlre should take place ill tlle states comprislng it. Mr. Cal-dwell, who had something to do with carrying out the federation scheme. as well as Mr. Addcrly, look upon the discontent; of tile Nova Scotians as a mere temporary ebul- iition of annoyance. When a now (lover- Itor General, whose antecedents do not as pcciall connect him with Canada, calls in at. I alilax on his way to his new gov- ernment, lllld talks the nlattnrquictly over with the rctllonstrants, their ill-humor will subside and things will come right in till: end. Suppose, however, instead of com- ing right, as these sanguine people expect, things got worse. Suppose the Nova Sco- lians, ﬁnding that the British Parliament will not do anything to relieve them from a connection which they declare is so odi- ous to them, should quietly secede front Canada and refuse to recognise in ally way the authority of the Confederation Parliament. Are we, in such an event, to assist Canada to maintain the Confedera- tion by force of arms? Such an idea is too absurd to entertain for a moment. Our position would be an embarrassing one: either to allow Canada to try her band at another war against secession, or under- take the hopeless task of‘kccpin r tllc peace between the two colonies. The result. might be to drive one or perhaps both into the arms of the United States.

It must not be lot-gotten that the Coll- federation doesnnt include all file mari- time Provinces. Ncwfoundhlnd and Prince. Edward Island are not members of it. If all the seaboard provinces had been in- cluded they might have held tllelr own. and reserved their old low duties. As it is, ova Scotia and New Brunswick are outvotcd on questions of fiscal policy by Canada. Alld there is good reason for supposing that the tariff question, if it has not led to tile di~sontent prc 'aillng in No- va Scotill, has at least aggravated it. Tlle people of Canada are protectionists. and the people of the maritime provillc: s are freetraders. Many of his glowing periods were followed by impressiblc bursts of applause, which culminated at the close in one long con- tillous round of cheering. On Monday morning \V. Ii. Dawson, came into Court. and gave himself up. Two indictments for forgery wcrc found against him, to which he pleaded guilty. The case of the Sumnlcrside Bank vs Thomas Crabb, was commenced on Monday morning and- continucd until Tuesday evening, when“ the jury gave a verdict for Mt. Crabb. The principal charge brought against the Defendant was want ofproper diligence or care, but this was not proved. No per- son cvcr hinted that Mr. ('rabb had takl ll the money, his character for honesty and uprightllcss is too well known, as was stated by tile Plaintiff's Attornicar On Tuesday the several trials against W. B. Dawson and others, were commenced. An attempt was made to disqualify Jung Peters from hearing these cases, on tllc grounds that he was a shareholder in tile Bank of l’. E. Island, anti that that liatlk’ were among tllc Plaintiffs. The Judge, ill order to remove this obstacle, sold his shares, and the cases are proceeding.

The alarm of fire was given about two o'clock yesterday. The Stable and work shop of Mr. John Grady was found to be on fire. The Fire I'illgitlc was on the spot in a few minutes, but the fire had got so far underway that it was found impossible to put it out, bllt the firemen prevented it front spreading to the ad- joining dwellings; the building ill which it originated, Lowcvtr, was completely destroyed. l"ortunatcly it was very calm, and there was a large open field ill tllc rear. A large lot of trcenails and finish fora vessel's cabin, alld a set of harness, were burnt. The origin of the tire is not exactly known, but is supposed to bc tllc work of some boys who were playing behind tllc stlblc. We feel very sorry for Mr. Grady, for such a loss those hard times will be severely felt.
