A Word with the “Patriot.”
Ovrrawa, March 7. I have not said a great deal about this city. Its growth, from the little village called Bytown, has been rapid. Of course, its selection as the capital of the Dominion has given it phenomonal opportunities; but the natural advantages of its position have also contributed to its progress. More lumber can be seen in a morning's walk around Ottawa than at any other point in Canada. Immense piles ot pine plank and boards are here ready for shipment ; and near the bridge below the Chaudiere Falls there is a veritable sea of lumber. Across the river the town of Hull presents the appearance of a large, thriving place. The manufacturing establishment of E. B. Eddy is one of the principal industries im that town, and gives employment to a small army of workpeople. Mr. Eddy has suffered severely from fire, but his energy carries him through all difticulties. The principal busiuess streets in Ottawa Elgin, C’Connor, Banks and Rideau. From the Parliament Buildings you can look for miles and see the city stretching out on every side. On Wellington Street, up near Stewarton, the street has been cut out of the side of a high bluff of solid rock, that towers away above those passing along. On this blutf Christ Church is situated, one of the handsome edilices owned in Canada by the Episcopal denomination. — Its in- terior is very fine, finished in cathedral style and luxuriously furnished. Canon Lauder is the Rector, and the Rey. Mr. Muggleston, the assistant Minister. The Ottawa Roman Catholic College is a large massive building, situated across the canal, out towards New Edinburgh. Mr. Thomas Curran, of Baldwin’s Road, P. E. I., is one of the teachers in this institution. Among the Islanders I met in Ottawa were Mr. J. W. Hughes, formerly of County Line, Mr. J. A. McKenna, of the Depart- ment of the Interior, aud Mr. Farrell, of Sturgeon, who has a position in the House of Commons. There are also a uumber of others from the Island who live at the capi- tal. An impression seems to prevail among a good many I met that the Maritime Pro- vinces are getting more than their share of Government offices, and it is certainly a fact that men from the lower provinces hold the Dest positions. Perhaps there is some- thing in the saying that men who eat fish have more brains than those who live prin- cipally on flesh food.
Rents are very high in Ottawa. An or- dinary dwelling house in any good locality rents from $20 to $25 per month, and living expenses are dear. The ordinary rate for board is $25 to $36-per month, according to accommodation. The Brunswick House, where I staid, is a fairly good hotel for those who do not want too much style, and i can recommend it to those paying Ottawa a short visit on§business. The Russel, Grand Union and Windsor are more expensive, have more style; but some say thet the bill of fare at them is no better than it should be. One fact is certain, they have not a3 nice meat in Ottawa as can be got in Charlottetown.
Ottawa is not a healthy city. its death rate is high. No doubt the situation of the greater part of the city, especially in Lower Town, has considerable te do with its unhealthiness. Ithink, however, that the excessively high temperature kept up in the houses has a good deal to do with it. Why it is that the Parliament buildings and departmental oflices are kept up to fever heat, is one of the questions I would like to have explained ?
I notice that a correspondent of the Patriot is pot well pleased with my reports from Parliament, especially that part of them that refers to the Island members. I ame sorry I _ cannot please thent. I might do so _ if { had no regard for accuracy; but truth must be told though the heavens (and the little gods) fall. For the satisfaction of our friends I may state, that the other after-

SrraNnGe AccipENt.—A Mra. McVey, living on Brussels Street, St. John, N. B., met with a strange accident on Monday night. She was in the act of sitting down when the chair siipped from under her and she fell breaking one of her legs.

Sap Suicipr.—Mr. George R. Davies, of the firm of Davies Bros., general dealers, Bloomfield, N. B., committed suicide by tak- ing strychnine a few days ago. Despondency over failure in business is thought to have been the cause of the rash act.
Miss Bessie H. Bedloe, of Burlington, Vt., had a disease of the scalp which caused her hair to become very hard and dry and to fall so freely she scarcely dared comb it. Ayer’s Hair Vigor gave her a healthy scalp, and made the hair beautifully thick and glossy.

PatnruL Accipent.—The Times reports that a blacksmith named Goldrup met with a painful accident in the I. C. R. shops at Mone- ton on Tuesday. It appears that he was in the act of passing out of the door of the blacksmith shop, when a workman who was repairing some machine on a scaffold about thirty feet above Mr. Goldrup, thinking no

Gone, But Not Forgotten.
On last Sunday morning, the 24th Feb., the citizens of the Fifth ward were shocked to learn of the death of Ambrose McDon- ald, who has lived among us for the past five years. He was born at Prince Edward Island, Canada, and was in the prime of life, being only thirty-nine years of age. The deceased was a brother-in-law of Mr. Angus McDonald, superintendent of bridges and building of the Southern Pacific rail- road, and was also a member of the Catho- lic Knights of America. The burial took place at 3 p.m. on Monday, the 25th ult., when the pall-bearers, composed of the Catholic Knights, wook the body to St. | Patrick’s church, Fifth ward, where the funeral service was held and performed by the Rev. Father Maury of the Fourth
