THE FRENCH IN UPPER EGYPT,

A letter first published in a Toulouse paper east a stranger light on the aims and methods of the Marchand expedition and when telegraphed in a summarized form to this continent seemed hardly credible. The faller details to hand by mail confirm the first impression of horror, and adds to it by further details. There are, it app2ars two letters, written by & non-commissiva- ed officer of Senegalese tirailleurs serving with the Marchand expedition, to his fami- ly im Toulouse, The firstis dated July

My only wish at the present moment is to see the Faidherbe (the boat the expedition was carrying) displayiog our flag between Khartoum = and Gondokors.” In a later com- munication, dated Tomvura, Aug. 27 the writer aays:—*We come into the Ubangi district to occupy Upper Egypt, make our strength known to the Dervishes, launch a boat on the Nile, and unite if postible our Obok colony on the Red Sea with our Congo poesessions on the Atlan— tic,”
