Dust n’ Bones by BILLY BAILEY

Presently I am sitting at my desk trying to come up with an introduction to my article for the X-Press. It’s like trying to contain water with a sieve. You see, this newspaper, for the most part, deals with facts. I would like to deal with life in all its infinite abstractness. This covers a lot and that’s where youcome in. I want to hear from the student body, sort through your feedback, and thereby come up with ideas for future stories. I want to write something you can relate to. Life is abstract and words try to provide substance to it but always fall short. It’s like trying to pick yourself up by yanking on the tongues of your sneakers. So Ihave a small problem with life, or at least the living of it. Life isa glorious thing which man has screwed up with systems and conditions. It seems as if there has to be conditions to every oolish facet of our lives. We attach strings to everyone, verything and even ourselves. This is problematic. If we do ot lose weight then we are unattractive. If we do not win hen we are losers. If they don’t meet our standards then they on’t belong. Could we not cut these stupid strings? The

system has something like cause and effect that we often let control us. We change the effect they have on us. If we don’t want to feel a certain way then why should we? We can learn from the past, make a difference in the present and change our future. Picture the future as a vast ocean of immense possibilities. We can fish this sea with skills learnt from the past. We are limited only by what we do now. The present must be used as a glorious net made up of the past. Each strand of this net is an experience which determines how strong the net is. Knowing and understanding where the weakest and strongest parts are enables you to use the net. You must continue adding on as many strong strands as possible. The stronger it is, the better your catch. The better the catch, the stronger your net becomes. Speaking about water, I think I’m getting too deep. Whenever, you write me, through the paper, you don’t have to give your name. I only want your feelings. This newspaper is located on the bottom floor of main. I want to write about you so tell me what you want to hear. It could be about love, Mondays or anything from the trivial to the deep. Whatever your thoughts, as the student body, or as individuals, I hope to receive them in submissions and comment upon them in this column. Let me know what you think.
