Warren Guy Disraxcep.— The distans cing of the favor.te Warren Guy in the 2,12 trot was one of the sensational features at the racing at the Granite State Park, Dover, N. H., last week. On the strength of his easy victory at Readville when Billy O’Neil drove bim, Warren Guy was a strong favorite. Lydiard was up behind him, and a bad break at the quarter put Warren Guy a distance <u‘ in the first heat and just as lost ground was being rapidly made up, another bad break put him out of the race.

An Old Acquaintance Bobs Up at Guelph, Ont.

(Guelph Mercury, Sept. 27 )

Mr, Geo. Lees, Chicago, an old Guelph | man, who was in the pork business here some twenty years ago, was in the city | today. He came from Prince Edward sland, where he has been overseeing the | erection of a pork packing house, the larg- est and most complete in the Dominion. The main building is 250 feet long, 80 feet wide, and the machinery house 100 feet long ‘and 56 feet wide. The capacity is 1,00@ bog a day.

Mr. Lees, hearing that there was a like- lihood of a ‘packing house being built bere, stayed over on his way home, not only to learn something regarding the pork packing industries, but to renew , Old acauaintances, He was welcomed by Mayor Hewer, whom Mr, Lees knew when a child, and a whole lot of other friends.

With regard to the pork packing indusa try in Guelph, Mr, Lees says that it 1s pi= cessary for Guelph and the farmera in th> vicinity within a radius of forty miles to have a pork packing factory. “It is one of the most promising industries for the present and future,” remarked Mr. Lees,

“and ought to have every encouragement from the city and the farmers. I know,’ he continued, “that in Wellington you have the best country for raising hogs and cattle that there is in this Province. Your farmers know howto raise.etock, and they have gaiaed for themselves a name in this line, which we hearall over the States.”

Mr. Lees came to Guelph in 1868, and left in 1879. Since then his business has been superintending the largest packing houses in the United States, and erecting plants for packing houses. He claims to be the oldest packer in the United States, and shipped in 1858 the first meat that was exported from New York to Liverpool: Ecgland. He is also the patentee of most of the machinery that is used in the United States.

In view of the herculean efforts which nc w appear to be necessary to draw atten- millinery displays, we have been usivy thinking of cabling for Sousa’s or Dan Godfrey’s band, but fird that Miss Murphy and her staff are as popular as ever, and thatthey have al] they can attend to.
