Tue Park Shoreway Committee met in the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Courtroom this forenoon. The committee appointed to wait on the Local Government reported that they had done so, and that the Gov- ernment were favorable to the granting of the necessary land, and also to thedonating of a small sum of money. The next meet- ing will be held on Tuesday morning in the same place.

Last evening, at 8 o'clock, a large number of the members of the masonic fraternity, followed the body of past Master Jas. ° Munroe, of Wallace, N. 8., who suddenly expired yesterday morning at the Rankin House, to the railway station. Mr. John J. Davies accompanied the body to Pictou, where he will deliver the remains to the bereaved widow. This sad occurrence cast a gloom over the city, and again proves to us the uncertainty of life.

A Movrrvat man whe recently ferossed in the ice boats to and from Prince Edward Island, has given to the Gazette a graphic ac- evunt of the trip. His letter coneludes with the following tribute to the men who man the boats: Too much cannot be ssid in favor of the gallant fellows who man the boats. They are perfect types of manhood, plucky and daring, and at the same time kind in the ex- treme, and, as too often the case, enduring hardships and braving dangers for a very small amount of remuneration.

‘Tue steamer Clifton has been seized at New Orleans, at the instance of Messrs. Brown brothers, bankers, of New York. She was owned by the North Atlantic steamship com- pany, of which Messrs. Stewart brothers, London, were managers, and was engaged last year in the service between London, Miramichi and Charlottetown. Some queer stories are told in connection with the dis- bursement bills of this steamer, which, when made public, will throw a great deal of light ©n some recent business failures.

Tue annual report of the commissioner of mines on the mines of Nova Scotia has been issued. It shows not only the richness and variety of the minera! resources of that pro- vinee, but further that the production in | nearly every line is increasing. From it we; learn that during the year the sales to Prince Edward Island were 49,168 tons, as against 52,760 tous for the preceding year.

Tae new fishery cruiser Triumph is a schooner of about 106 tons burthen. Her lines are very symmetrical, and betoken lively sailing qualities. She is planked with oak, while her flooring and general interior work is of juniper and spruce. Her bottom is thoroughly copper-fastened to deep-load mark, and her wales are double-fastened with refined iron. The armory isan apartment 2,422 feet in di- mensions, well lighted and ventilated from the deck, and bristling with rifles, cutlasses, navy revolvers and cases of ammunition, which have been transferred thither from the cutter Houlette.

THE WATER RISING.

Monrreat, April 22.

This morning those watching the drive as far as the eye could see, saw a tract of ice coming down towards Victoria Bridge at a rapid rate. This was lake ice, and on its reaching the ice at the bridge a loud crash- ing sound announced that a jam had oc- curred, The next moment the water rose with greater rapidity than ever before. Nun’s Island is completely submerged, and four flats of buildings were covered with water ina short space of time. The rise was so sudden that the employes and other inmates had narrow escapes from drowning. Nearly all the cattle on the island were lost on this shore. The stone house of the nuns is flooded, and all communication with it is cut off. The water is rising rapidly, and the flood promises to equal that of last year.

A terrific cyclone swept over this coun- try last night. Over 30 houses were de- stroyed and about 25 persons killed.

A tornado swept over a portion of Ken- tucky this morning. Only one person is known to be killed, but destruction of property is enormous.

Terrible Affair. Orrawa, April 22. Robert McIver, a recently arrived English immigrant, employed by a farmer named Hunt, 30 miles from here, has been arrest- ed on a charge of attempted murder. His employer was found yesterday horribly cut up and mangled, whilst the axe, covered with blood, lay near. Nothing further is known of the crime, save that the circum- stances were such that McIver has been arrested for the crime. —~-—_-_~.»>-e--——__—_

Another Terrible Accident.

Morrispure, Ont., April 22.

A terrible accident occurred here this morning. A ireight train going west went through the bridge at Nash’s Creek, carry- ing the engineer and fireman to instant death. The brakeman was rescued nearly dead. The loss will be very heavy. It is said that the bridge was inspected last week and pronounced safe.

Hawirax, April 22. On Tuesday two young men named Boudrou and Gilly left Yarmouth to sail up the river. Yesterday the boat was found and Gilly’s body recovered.
