J. s. MacDonald Rink Wins Championship At Con.federation iSpie1

.1. Sterling "Toot" MacDonald yesterday skipped his rink to the Grand Championship in the Con- federation Bonspiel for the second successive year and retained the Maritime Central Airways Trophy.

The Reserve Championship- the Imperial Oil Trophy was won by a saint John Thistle Club rink skipped by H. V. Jefferies.

Two other trophies were decid- ed as the Bonspiel proper reached a climax. The Morrison and Mc- Rae Ltd. trophy went to a Char- lottetown rink piloted by Ed Tan- ton, while F. R. McLaine also of the local -Club won the Prowse Bros. Ltd. silverware.

The l"voadmakers' Shield. award- ed on a "points" basis went to I rink skipped by Arnett Howatt. A spccial prize, lucky number game. was won by the Neil MacKav rink from Moncton.

Earlier in the week a youthful rink from Summerside, skipped by T. A. Campbell, won the whole- sale Grocers Trophy with four straight victories, while the Brit- ish American Oil Trophy was cap- tured by the E. F. Acorn foursome.

Last night the i section got underway with two matches being played at Summerside and three at the Charlottetown Club.

In repeating his triumph. J. S. MacDonald. with one exception. had the same rink as performed last year. The only change was in the position of mate where Bill Maciveill of this year's Provincial championship rink replaced Dr. W. L. MacDonald. The other mem- bers of the rink are Harry Mne- Donald and Clifford MacDonald.

The Grand Championship . was decided in 9. morning round with the Col. G. E. Full rink. A big "live" in the fourth and shaped the pattern of victory for the ".Vlacs." y.

The Jefferias rink from saint John in winning one of the major awards. knocked off the Col. 6. E. Pull rink in I match last night 9-7 for the Reserve Title.

Tied-up coming mine in the last end Ed Tanton in an altar- iaoon match. scored I 12-ll vic- tory over the Col. Pull rink to win the Morrison and McRIe Trophy.

In the play for the Prowse Bros. Trophy the Rankine McLaine rink scored an impressive id-3 triumph over a youthful quartet skipped by Elmer MacDonald. For the first seven ends it was anybody's game. but the McLaine rink tallied in each of the remaining five ends for a clear cut decision.

Prizes were presented last night to winners and runners-up by Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell, chairman of the Confederation Bonsplel committee and Mir. R. S. P. Jnnline. president of the Prov- incial Curling Association.

ers have consolidatod first place in the Maritime Major Hockey League schedule. and it was Hall- fax saint Mary's defeat at the hands of saint John Beavers by I 4-3 count at Dartmouth on Wed- nesday night that did the trick. speculating on the situation in this column yesterday. the pos- sibilities of the postponed Hali- fax-Beavers clash at Dartmouth had slipped memory for the mom- ent. and looking to the outcome of last night's battle between Saint Mary's and Islanders to be the game that could cut and dry the position for the locals. At time of writing the contest last night between Saints and Is- landers at Halifax had not been played. but as far as the final standing in the league race for the Islanders is concerned. the result will make little difference now. With a total of 85 points be- fore last night's game, Halifax. with wins in all of their remain- ing six starts in the schedule can only rack up I total of 9'1 points. and the Islanders already stand pat for first place with 98 points.

in fact all of the final stand- ings as to how the teams will finish at the end of the regular schedule have been decided. Hall- fax are safe for second spot over third place Beavers as the latter only have five games left to play, and with only 67 points to date can at best only compile '77 points. which is a full eight points he- hind Halifax's present standing of 86. Moncton Hawks are I long 2'1 points from overtaking Beavers and are definitely slated for the cellar position.

Although the remaining games of the schedule will no doubt change the actual point differ- ences between the various posit- ions. Islanders are definitely slat- ed to meet Moncton in one semi- final hracket and Halifax and Saint John in the other. As I re- minder. both semi-final series will be best five out of nine games. with the two finalists meeting in I hes: four out of seven for the title.

Speaking of league races. there is a close battle being fought for the third and fourth playoff spots in the National Hockey League between Boston, New York and Montreal, while Detroit and Tor- onto are waging a close struggle for the two top positions. Like three peas in Ipod, Bruins. Rang- ers and Canadiens leave little to choose-from in the third, fourth and fifth place positions.

Only three points separate those positions. Boston holds the slight edge for third spot with I total of 51 points, New York trau- ing by one point with 50 and Montreal with 48. At least that is how they all stand at the end of 58 games played. but with 16 per team still to go. anything might happen, but from the way those three squads have been performing. it is our bet that it will be a battle right down to the wire as to which of the three will garner the two playoff. positions.

P.W.C. Welshmen Score Hoop Victory Over S.D.U.

Yesterday afternoon Earl Nich- olsonls P. W. C. Welshmen accom- plished a feat that no other Welsh hoop team has been a-ble to do in at least four and perhaps more years. beating the Saint Dun- stan's University team. in I bit- ter tooth and nail struggle the tricolor basketeers shaded the red-and-whiiem 52-48 thereby edging into 9. first place tie with their arch rivals. in the Island Senior League.

The game, watched by a capacity crowd, was just about the fastest shot by Cayle to be evened almost immediately by McAndrew's lay- up. From there the battle see- sawed back and forth for the re- mainder of the half with neither team holdiing any lead for more than I few minutes at I time. the canto i even-steven at twenty-one each. Ball-handling was shamp in the period as it was through most of the game.

The second half was just about I repetition of the first, showing the fast passing and shooting that characterized the initial frame. Both teams missed on some dandy opportunities but more than made up for it on the shots that were scored. Play was even for the first part of the period until P. W. Truro Wins N.S. Curling Title

HALIFAX. Feb. 22 -(GP) - Bouby MoLella.n's Truro rink to- dill lifted the Nova Scotia senior curling championship. defeating Bob CIllendar's Mayflower rink 14-8 in the finals.

The rink. skipped by Mobs-llan for six games, was taken over by Bobby Jones for the final with McLeliIn moving 'back to mate. Lead on the rink was Joe Murphy and Fred Whitman was second. George Bell mated the Clllendar rink with Rog Piercey second and Lloyd Oxner lead.

Winners over the Truro rink by I 13-7 count in the semi-finals. the Calisndar rink picked up where it left off and for the first four ends. it appeared as if they would walk off with the final. The tide turned in -the fifth when Truro hung I five on the board and the locals never recovered. The collapse of the Halifax rink started from the five end and when Truro registered another five in the seventh. it was all over.
