—Ex-President Cleveland is going’ to Ottawa soon to ‘ish in Canadian waters.

—The Indiaas of British Columbia on several important reserves are finding ex- cellent precious metal prospects and are wishful to transfer their interests to white investors. As, however, the law will not suffer white men to enter and work on the Indian domain, it is suggested that the Indians should form mining, industrial organizations of theirown. This is not altogether unlikely, as many of the coast and some of the inland Indians are well fixed, and some living near the sea own and manage successfully smart sealing and fishing sloops. The ‘Indiaps of British Columbia are in the upper country, partly occupied in placer mining, but they have not hitherto attempted quartz working for the precious metals. The latest Indian gold finds are io the reserve at Saanich, near Victoria, where they have obtained, it is said, surface showings of $12 a ton.

—The make-up of S'r Henry Irving as Napoleon, in “ Madame San Gene,” is thus graphically described by the London Times: ** The house rubbed its eves with astonishment. For there before it, in the undoubted person of Sir Henry Irving. stood the short, fat, traditional figure of Napoleon. How the transformation is accoinplished we do not profess to say. A coat cut high over the chest, together with high shoulders and heavy epaulettes, bas a wonderfully shortening effect on the actor’s figure; padded hips and legs seem to do the rest. But when ail allowance 1s made for these sartorial devices and for the alert, bustling manner and rapid, staccato utterances which Sir Henry Ir- ving (unlike himself) assumes, the result is still a marvel.”

Moncton Times: The Charlottetown Patriot puts the total consumption of burning oil in Canada at °30 million gallcos a year, and the advantage to the people as the result of the reduction in the duty from 6 to 5 cents with the per- mission to import in tank vessels at $1 ,— 206,000 a year, or about $1.20 per family of five persons. There is something wrong with the Charlottttown grit organ’ calculations The total consumption of eoal oil in Canada—American and Canadian—1is not 30 million gallons, but about 18 million gallons a yeur, of which less than 8 million gallons is im- ported, the total duty on which at the old rate would be, not a million two hundred thousand, but lees than half a widlion dollars. So that if oil had been made free the saving would not bare been as great a the Patriot estimates will accrue from the paltry reduction made. The removal of taxation from the people by the reduction of one cent per gallon in the duty is a simple sum in arithmetic and the working- man and farmer will beable io estimate, at the end of the year, how much of a cut it has ewabled them to effect in their oil bills.

His Excellency Marquise Iton has left Japan on the steamer Ewpress of India en route to England to represent Japan at the Diamond Jubilee.

An interview with Grumbkoff Pasha, the German officer who re-organized the Turkish artillery and who entered Larisea at the head of the Turkish troops, is pub- lished. Grombkoft dwells upg@h the splendid conduct of the Turks and says the capture of Larissa did not cost them a single man. Continuing, the German officer says the works constructed by the Greek edgineers of Larissa are de- serving of all praise and he fails to understand why they were aban- doned. The Turkish army in the field, he further remarks, is one of the finest Turkey ever possessed, and he says no praise is too great for both soldiers and officers. Grumbkoff Pasha gives many instances of the self sacrifice and enthnsi-

regard tothe Greeks, the German officer asserts that both officers and men were seized with panic, and that great numbers of Greeks, in the face of their enemy, stripped themselves of their uniforms, donned civilian clothes and besercl.ed the Turks to spare their lives. In conclusion he says thattbe Turks treated all their prisoners and wounded with the greatest care.

Astoria, Ore., May 10.—According to private advices here F. M. B. Litchenburg, a young Englishman, who arrived in this city about two years ago and left a year later, has met a horrible fate at the hand of cannibals in the South Sea Ixlands. Litchenburg went directiy from Astoria, together with an ex-missionary, whose name is not kuvown, to trade with the natives of the Santa Cruz Islands, which have a population of about 30,000. The ex-missionary who had traded with then before and had been among them in his religious capacity, entertained no fears for the safety of himself and companion. The men, says the letter, procured traders outfits and set sail from Australia for the islands. The natives who are reputed to be more ferocious than any African tribes captured and held them for some time. Later they were killed and eaten. The story gained circulation through half civilized native, who witnessed the awful feast. Litchenburg belonged to a promi- nent London family. His father is said to be very wealthy.
