UPEI RUGBY CLUB

The UPEI mens rugby team began the year off on a strong note by defeating last year’s league champions, UNB by a score of 17-5 on Sept. 17. UPEI’s #2 team also won its first game of the season by a score of 10-7. UPEI’s players of the game were Ian Johnson and Aaron Thompson. Last weekend UPEI split two of its games against Mt. Allison in Sackville. UPEI’s second team was victorious, when rookie Jamie Coffin scored the only try of the game in the last minute of play. Scott McCormack added a penalty kick to put the game away, for a score of 8-0. Player of the game for UPEI was James Bellis, but

equally strong efforts were given by all the players including pack captain Adam Kenny and newcomer Dwayne Rodd.

UPEI’s first team suffered a hard 33- 3 loss. Early errors and penalties by the Panthers helped a Mountie team which included two national under-21 players to win. The Panthers didn’t give up and showed a strong physical presence making this an injury plagued victory for the Mounties, who saw six players leave the field due to injuries. Veteran stand-off Aaron Carr scored UPEI’s only points on a penalty kick. Player of the game for UPEI was blind-side flanker Charlie Trainor.

Women's Rugby

On September 24th the Women’s rugby team added another win to their list of victories this season. On Sunday the women! travelled to Mt. Allison where they won 17- 0. Rookies Sarah Evans and Heather Ales and veteran Shannon Gillis came through for the team with a try each. Heather Ales also made the only conversion. Once again the MVP was Shannon Gillis. The team will be travelling to UNB on Oct. 7 where they hope to pick up yet another win. Good luck ladies!

THE INTRAMURAL REPORT

Intramural Men’s Basketball action kicked off last Monday and Tuesday, with exhibition games in the A and B divisions. The B division saw the Alumni team beat Play It Again Sports 57-47. Duncan Shaw paced the Alumni squad with 18 points, while Todd Gausin had 11. Tim Wolfe had 21 for Play It Again. Roddy Fisher had 20 points to lead Charlie Cheverie’s team to a 69-36 victory over AVC, Paul Liebenberg had 10 points in a losing effort.

In other games, President’s Choice beat Jamie Small’s team 44-24, and Finley Martin’s team defeated Phillip Cutcliffe’s 78-48. In the A division, Pat Jensen and Dave Mullally had 23 and 22 points respec- tively to power The Bums to victory. Mike ‘*Skinny’’ Smith tickled the twine for 21 points in a losing cause but that wasn’t enough as The Girls ran out of steam in a 83-70 loss. In another game Jason Kielly’s team downed The Posse 89-64.

Intramural Tennis Tournament action had Andrew Breau winning over Chris Gerrard. Gerrard had to pull out because of a knee injury.

Dating back as far as the Egyptians, male circumcision was and is a controver- sial topic. Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin from a penis. The operation usually takes place within 8 days of birth, although it may be performed at any age.

The most popular reasons for being circumcised are hygiene, attractiveness of _ the penis when circumcised, and because that’s the way Daddy looks. Ifa child is not circumcised he must learn to clean

under the foreskin to remove the build-up of prepuce (penile secretion), which if left can

‘cause problems and it can smell bad.

More females find the clean lines ofa _ circumcised penis more sexually appealing than an uncircumcised penis. To quote one woman on the Internet, who had her son circumcised ‘‘ We weighed the pros and cons, [of circumcision], and they seemed about equal, so the final decision was based on ‘‘like father, like son.’’ This brings us to another interesting question: What are the arguements regarding circumcision?

. In the 19th Century circumcision was performed on both sexes to prevent mastur- bation, however, this reasoning seems rather outdated by today’s sexual standards. Today’s more popular reasons for circumci- sion are:

-to make sons resemble their circum- cised fathers,

-to conform socially with peers,.

-to improve hygiene, a

-to prevent phismosis, a painful condition in which the. foreskin will not retract over the glans,

- as prophylaxis, (treatment), for urinary tract infections, and sexually transmitted diseases,including AIDS,

-and to help prevent cancer of the penis and cervix (yes, we know men don’t have a cervix, but their female sexual partners do). ,

It is believed that females who have an uncircumcised sexual partner may be more susceptible to cervical cancer, and that only uncircumcised males fall prey to penile cancer. The only ‘cure’ for this type of cancer is to remove the affected area, in other words: cut it off. It is hard to decide whether or not circumcision actually can help prevent STDs or cancer -- it depends on which report you read, and which side of
