Origin of “Mr.” and “ Mrs.”

The history of those everyday titles

of Mr. and Mrs. which are now the|

common property of everyone, is not without interest, though in some of its steps it isa little obscure.

[In the early time of our history the ordinary man was simply William or

John; that is to say, he had merely

a Obristian name, without avy kind of

** handle” before it or surname after

it. Some means of distinguishing one Jobo or one William from another

necessary. Nick-names derived {cm a mau’s trade, or from bis dwelliog- place, or from some personal

were tacked on to their names, and plain John became John Smith. As yet there were no “ Misters” in the land.

Some John Smith accumulated more wealth than the bulk of his fellows— became, perhaps, a landed proprietor, or any employer of hired labor. Then he began to be called iu the Norman- French of the day the “ Maistre” of this or of that, of these or those work- men.

In this time ‘* Maistre” or** Maistor” us it soon become, got tacked on before his mame, and he became Maistre Smith, and his wife was Maistress Smith.

But gradualiy the sense of possession was lost sight of and the title was cosferred upon any man who had attained social distinction of auy kind whether by mere posse-sion of wealth or by holding some position of more or less consideration and importance.

It is only within comparatively modern times that the term came to b3 considered an almost indispensable adjuact to everyone's pame.
