Primitive Artillery.

As to the character of the first instru- ment for the throwing of missiles and just when it was invented we have no certain knowledge, but it must have been atan early date, for we read in Genesis x, 9, that ‘‘Nimrod was a mighty hunter before the Lord,’’ and surely the skill that has kept his name in remembrance for thousands of years

Without doubt man early learned | how much execution can be done by a well aimed stone, and attempts to hurl it with greater force and accuracy probably led to the invention of the sling, one of the simplest as well as most formidable of these early weapons. It was long one of the principal instru ments of war among the ancients, and the story of David and Goliath is a good illustration of what could be done by one skilled in its use. This skill, how- ever, could be acquired only by early and careful training.

“Sinall Cap.” Shafter.

**Pecos Bill is not the only nickname that General Shafter ever enjoyed,’’ said an old newspaper man the other day. **Out in Denver he was known for years as ‘Small Cap. Shafter,’ and as he is anythirg but small the title calls for an explanation. It seems that a banquet of | some sort had been given toa lot of army officers, and among the guests was General, then Colonel, Shafter. Theold Denver Tribune printed an account of the affair, and a list of those present was included in the article.

‘*When the proofs were examined be- fore the paper was made up, it was ob- served that Shafter’s initials were in lower case type, and the proofreader promptly marked them ‘small cap.,’ meaning thaé they should be reset in capitals of a srnall size. The intelligent compositor supposed that the inscription indicated some military tithe with which he was unfamiliar, and instead of ma}s-

ing the proper correction substituted |! ‘Small Cap. Shafter,’ and thus it ap-

peared on che following morning.
