LONDON, Nov. 3.-—Amid the m‘st and the rain off Portland the Pre- miers of the Empire Saturday saw a war at sea. Through a thick haze 5- lnch guns flashed and roared as they crashed their huge projectile; through a target lying low on the horizon.

Airplanes soared fi'om giant air- craft carriers and swooped around the Nelson, flagship of the Altantlc fleet, on which the Empire Premiers had put to sea. a mine-layer strewed the Nelsons path with mines. A depth charge sent columns of water into the a'r. Waspisli destroyers buzzed around discharging torpedoes. But the doughty Nelson went on her way unscratched and from her conn- ing tower, the Premier and their al.- tending ministers took iii every detail of the heroic scene. Among those who watched were Fame Nlinister R. B. Bennett. of Canada: Hon_ Hugh Guthrie. Canadian Minister pf ‘Jus- t'ce. and Hon. H. H. Stevens. the Do- minionfis Minister of Trade and Com- merce. In ‘actual warfare a vastly different story with no safe comfort- able return journey, might have been told.

The navy airmen had a difficult time of it. One plane fell into the channel. It sank. but her crew of three was rescued by a destroyer. in the boisterous weather two. more crashed in landing. Prime Minster Banuay MacDonald ‘irho had plan- ned to fly from Hendron, was advised not to make the attempt, and he missed the demonstration altogether.

As the mist grew heavy the Cen- turion, British battleship, which per- forms evolutions under wireless con- trol without a soul being on board. disappeared in the great blanket of black with the target she towed. Then the mist lifted a little. The. grelit guns of the Warspite. the Barham and the Malaya flatbed, their roars went rcverberatiniz down the chan- nel and over the distant hills of Dor- set. Water spouts leaped around the target. From the signal brdge oi the Nelson on which the writer stood. one could feel the quivering of the air it-. self.
