Sharp declines in coppers and other metal shares that have had a big rise became infectious and traders rushed to take profits in other groups. The ticker tape ran late on four separate occasions totalling one hour 12 minutes. Brokers ascribed the fall to a technical correction. i The estimated cash loss was based on a $1.60 drop in the Asso- ciated Press average of 60 stocks to $197.50. The Dow Jones. in- dustrial average fell 4.23 to 541.72: A U.S. government decision to divert to civilian markets all nickel shipments scheduled for de- livery to its agencies this year knocked International Nickel down 3 points to close at 91%. Vy} Little Hope Bomarc Missile Will Be Manufactured Here By DAVE McINTOSH Canadian Press Staff Writer OTTAWA (CP)—There is little or no chance that Bomare antt- aircraft missiles will be manufac- tured in Canada, informants said Friday. However, there is some chance that new electronic equipment for the air defence system will be made in this country, they added The government announced Sept. 23 that two Bomare ground- to-air missile bases will be estab- lished in Canada at a cost of $164,000,000 and come into cper- ation in 1961. New radar stations would be built and $100,000,000 worth of electronic equipment added to the air defence commu- nication and control ‘system. Prime Minister Diefenbaker said at that time that it was hoped that production-sharing ar- rangements would be worked out with the United States but that this would take time. UNLIKELY PLAN Authorities said production- sharing arrangements are un- likely to apply to the Bomar, manufactured by the Boeing Air- plane Company of Seattle, Wash. They advanced three reasons for this: The relatively smail numbers of Bomares required in fect that military technology Is advancing so rapidly that the Bo mare program for Canada may be cancelled before 1961. U.S. officials came to Ottawa this week to hold preliminary talks with their Canadian counter: parts on possible production-shar ing. No decisions were reaches, Officials said, but more meetings will be held. POPULATION INCREASES QUEBEC (CP) — The popuia- tion of Quebec City stood at 233,962 at April 30, an increase of 4,000 over the previous year, it was announced Saturday. Va- lere Desjardins, city statistician, said in his annual report that the increase amounted to 23 per cent over the 12-month period. He said 215,964 persons in the city are Canada; the opposition of U.S. in- dustry and Congress to any loss of defence production to Canada; and duplication of cost in estab- lishing a new production source for the Bomarc. Indeed, there is some talk in the defence department to the ef- French-speaking Canadians.
