At last a rocket rose over the Palace,
bursting in the air, and scattering its tri-
coloured lights in all directions, aud then an-,
other, and the work began. Nine ships of
the line and a smaller steamer poured out
their broadsides with terrible rapidity ; two
and two they engaged, and by the flashing of
the discharges, hulls and rigging were brought
into bold relief. In the intervals of com-)
parative lull, when only @ dropping shot
could bere and there be beard, the Rifles in
the rigging engaged, and sparks, as it were,
played aboat the upper parts of the vessels,
ahd then the tremendous broadsides peured
out again and again, continuing without in-
termission for full half an hour. I can ill
describe the worderful pictorial effects of
this scene. The dense volumes of smoke rising
over the vessels, and rendered visible by the
bright dashing of the eannun; the tremendous

rifles, playing like freflies around the rig-|

land—all formed a novel and magnificent
spectacle whieh would have furnished grand
