THE HERALD, WEDNESDAY , JUNE 3, 1868. ranean —V——e “pan Halifax Presbyterian Witness says :— The mean- est thing we ever heard of was done in P. FE, Island, pho people snade presents to the Minister and then 1 them against him, and robbed him of part of his Cone besides.” We wonder If the Patriot knows any- oe about this affair, and whether he believes the ‘people ” alluded to would be anything the worse of paving 4 share of religious education imparted to them, ag well as a knowledge of arithmetic. Mn. Robert Jenkins, son of J, Jenkins, Esq., Ship- pullder, was drowned at Little River, Lot 56, on the 28th of April, by the upsetting of a boat in which he and his prother were taking a sail, He was an exemplary young man, and leaves a young wife and three children, besides alarge number of relatives and friends, to lament his patimely death, GyoRGERTOWN celebrated the Queen's Birthday in good style. A military review, Royal salute, feu de jole, hes and fireworks made up the programme, rejoiced the Inhabitants of the capital of King’s County, and testi- fied to their loyalty. Srers are being taken by the Militia Officers of Queen's County, to retain Field Inspecting Officer Col, A. J, Douglass Smith, in his present position. An address to His Excel- elncy the Lieut. Governor, to apply to the proper military authorities on the subject, has been prepared, Private letters from the Western States report that the geain crop ia looking finely, and that the weather js all that tho farmers could ask, Fully one-third more wheat has been sown this year, than lust, and the pros- ‘pect for good crops was never better, Ma. Gronur Praxe, of the firm of Peake Brothers & Co., of this city, had his leg broken in the hold of the barque Clara Novella, on Wednesday evening last,—a bale of goods having fallen on him, Tun Gegree of M. A., was conferred npon Mr, L, G. Me- Neill, of this Island,by the Ecinburgh University, this spring. He also obtained a Gold Medal for superiority in Mathe- matics and Natural and Moral Philosophy. Tun Marquis of Hastings having betted £100,000 stg. uponarecent horse-vace In England, and lost, he com- mitted suicide almost immediately after. This ought to throw a damper upon betting at horse-races, Some of our St. John and Halifax contemporaries are introuble. The Halifax Cétézen has been in Court and convicted of libel; the St. John News ditto, and the Jour nal of the same city fs also in Court ona similar charge. ‘Tun steamer Emperor is now plying between Shediac, Newcastle, Richubucto and Chatham. She docs not touch at Summerside and Pictou, as anticipated. Sum- merside ts In the dumps accordingly. Business men complain of dull times in St. John, N. B., and Hahfax, The Quoen's birth-day was celebrated with much eciaéin both cities on the 25th inst, R. T. Houman’s brig, the Keiradin, Cole, master, from Liverpool G, B, arrived at Summerside on the 22nd ult., with a general cargo of merchandize. DIskakLI BACKING DOWN. — A London despatch of May 20th says: ** Disraeli writes to Mr. Gladstone that he will not further oppose the passage of the Church Bill. Tur Yarmouth Herald says that che fishermen along the coast are dving well, cod and halibut being very plenty. Tur Rev. Mr. Davis, of this city, lectured in Summer- side Jast Friday, on the subject of Baptisin. Tun steamer Flamb- rough, from Montreal, with 2,000 barrels of flour, arrived at this Port on Saturday last. Tip: Jail at Neweastle, Miramichi, received considera- ble injury by fire last week. Aor of City militia-men were fined before a Magis- trates’ Court on Monday last for non-attendance at drill. An English paper says: —The Catholies of [reland are equally surprised aud delighted at the great major- iry obtained over the Ministry, Most of their journals write sensibly and moderately about it; many of the out- and-out Protestant journals write, as aay be expected, wildly. Oue threatens us with the shaking of the (ound- ations of society; another observes that'the indignant Protestant apirit of the lind will yet rise in its awaken- ed strength’’(as well ag it might alter the above-men- tioned shaking), The Derry Sentinel calls upon the men of Ulster to make theic power felt, and hints at the revolution. The Mail thiuaks Mr.Disraeli’s plan decidad- ly worse than Mr Gladstone's; the former woul place 400,00. a year in the hands of the Roman Catholic Episcopacy, “without reserving a right ot re- vision, or even of audit, ‘The latter would at least not establish a ‘Papal domination’ in Ireland. ** On the contrary, with adescent as sudden as the fall of a porteullis, it( Mr Gladstone’s method) would place an iron barrier in front of the ambition of Rome, No status would remain for their Prelacy., no subsilies for their colleges; no State authorisation for anything—not even a continuance of the grant to Maynooth ; no mor- al influence as a set-off against the legnl establishment of the ‘erecd of the minority’, Their whole cler'cal sys- tem would at ence drop to the level of the Wesleyan or any other dissenting organisation.” An amusing trial has taken place in France. It ap- pears that’at Rheims, where Madame Cliquot, whose champagne is celebrated over Europe, resides, there js one M. Blondean, a wine manufacturer, who, being an eye witness of the prodigious number of eases and bottles dospatched to all parts of the world from the lady's storehouses, conceived the idea of finding out a widow of the game name, and making her a partner in his firm. He succeeded in lighting upon her, and actu- ally persuaded another Widow Cliquot to join him and enablo him to reehristen his firm Veuve Cliquot, The real original widow brought the case before the Tribunal of Commerce, and claimed exclusively the style and title of Veuve Cliquot; but did not entirely succeed. A court of law, however, appreciated M, Blondeau's in- nuity in inventing his widew, with more severity, and ided that inasmuch as this second Widow Cliquot took an active pirt inthe managementand operations ofthe firm of Blondean et Cie, but simply gave it her namo for the sole and obvious parpose of setting up an advorso title to which it had vo moral claim, her name must cease to appear in connection with the firm of Blondeau et Cie., and condemned her jointly with Blon- deau to pay the costs of the suit, and a sam of 3), 000 es damages to the Widow Cliquot. Senator Wilmot, when proceeding from Sir Jonn A. Macdonald's residence, on Saturday evening, to his lodginga, waa challenged by the seatry on passing the jail, and declining to answer was placed under arrest. After having been detained twenty minutes he succeed. ed in proving his identity and was discharged.—Otowa egram.
