o ee HORRIBLE Ovn little town was thrown inte an ermenal #tate of excitement on Tuesday by an event which is happily of very rare occurrence in this Island, namely—the apprehension and examination of a man accused of an appatent- ly causcloss and cold-blooded murder, ‘The man supposed to have been murdered is a sailor by the name of Bradley, on beard the schooner Ambrose, Turnbull, master. This vessel was on Monday night lying at anchor off Dunk River Bridge. It appeais that the man—Bradley—was left alone in charge of the schooner, On Tuesday morning about seven or eight o'clock, Mr. Philip Baker went on board and was horriticd to find the cabin floor covered with blood. He found an axe, an open razor, and a long sharp knife—the two latter covered with blood in the cabin. On the cabin stairs and the bulwarks of the vessel he saw the stains of blood, but no other traces of the man could be found, Previous to coming on board Mr. Baker met a man, evidently a sailor, fn the lane that led to the shore. ‘This man asked him if he knew where Captain ‘Turnbull was, and said that he had been waiting for him, When Mr. Baker saw the dreadful state of things on board the schooner he immediately suspected that the man whom he had met had committed the murder, He therefore with as little delay as possible proceeded to Summerside to have him apprehended. The man suspected of anurder was found without the least trouble conversing with his mate on the street. Lis story is as follows:—He says that he was looking for a berth, and hearing that Capt. ‘Turnbull wanted a hand, he went to Bedeque tosee him. ‘That he slept ina house there on Monday night intending in the morning to look for the Captain, He did not get up till pretty late on Tuesday morning, and went im- mediately on board the schooner, which it seems was lying some distance from the shore, Having got aboard or alongside of her, we are not sure which, he saw a man with a razor in his hand, He asked him if Captain ‘Turnbull was on board, to which the other replied that he was not on board. and that if he did not come soon he would not find him there. He then immediately went ashore. He ofcourse denies having committed the horrible crime laid to his charge. His name is Andrew Benson; he ig a foreigner—a Swede, we have heard. We were pre- sent at his examination before Harry Green, James Campbell, and Win, Beairsto, Esqrs. He is not a vicious looking man, and told his story without any hesitation or embarrass- ment. The body was tound to-day. (Wednes- day). ‘The throat is cut, but we believe that there are no other marks of violence about his person, SUICIDE, Since the above was written, we learn that to Tnaneact wae held hefore +, on the body of Bri ieyeat Wednesday. A Doctor was culled in to ex- amine the wound, who said he believed the cut on the throat was not sufficient to cause death for some time. It is believed that the unfortunate tellow—who had been drinking hard for some days previous—iflicted the wound himself and afterwards jumped over- board, ‘There were no other marks on his body but the cut on the throat. ‘The Jury returned a verdict of * Suicide.” te Iy another column will be found the Card ot » Simon Fraser's Boarding House, We have much pleasure in recom- mending it to the traveling public, te A large number of heavy horses have already been shipped from “here this spiing. ‘The raising of this kind of stock should engage the attention of our farmers. ia Ir is with pleasure that we call the attention of the travelling portion of our read- ers to Messrs. J. Crawford & Son’s advertise- ment in another column, We can speak ex- perimentally of Crawtord’s Hotel, and in Justice to its proprictors we must say that everything in connection with it was carried on to our entire satisfaction. It is conducted on tee-total principles. Therefore our read- ers, when in that part of the New Dominion, should enquire tor Crawford's Hotel. Messrs. Crawford & Son's moderation, and their obliging qualities, cannot fuil to secure for them # good share of public patronage. We wish them success.
