MYSTERY AND CRIME.
{From the New York Herald,}

A great metropolis must necessarily offer feom
time to time extraordinary cases of mystery and
me. New York is no exception to the general

. On the contrary, its position as a central
point of transit from Europe to every part of
America, and the Islands of the Pacific, and to
China and Japan and other Asiatic countries
makes it the focus of all the wickedness of the
world. Our own dangerous classes may at any
time receive accessions from the cracksmen of
London and the thugs of India. The daily arri-
wal and departure of thousands of strangers ren-
ders the vigilance of the most cflicient police
cotnparatively tiseless. 11 is impossible for the
ce to ‘‘spot’’ every suspicious character who

woeks in New York a fresh field of operations.

A full record of the larcenies and burglaries and
murders of the past six months in this city would
be‘almost fncredible. A long list of unexplain-
able disappearances during that period might be
made out from the daily papers. The daylight
robberies in Wall strect alone would furnish a
thrilling chapter in the history of crime, Tlotels
and fashionable boarding houses, if their inner
life were exposed, would reveal pictures of ini
qnity uo less startling than the most disgusting
scenes of which crowded tenement houses are
sometimes the theatre, Many a ‘‘skeleton in the
house” might be discovered in recesses of the
brown stone from mansions occupied by the fami-
lies belonging preeminently to our ‘comfortable
classes.”’

The sudden death of Mr. Spicer, of Eleventh
Street, is still a mystery as profound and apparent-
ly as insoluble as that of the Burdell murder in
Bond Street. The strange and unsatisfactory
verdict of the Coroner’s inquest in the Spicer
case exonerated the druggist and the servant sent
for the seidlitz powder, and perhaps strained a
point to exonerate Mr. Spicer himself from the
suspicion that he had committed suicide, » But if
there were a murder in the case the coroner's in-
quest failed to discovery jt, or at least to disclose
it.. The responsibilities of a coroner's jury are
limited; but it really seems that in the Spicer
case the jury confined itself so strictly within its
legal limitations as to have left the public mind
in a painful state of uncertainty vespecting it,
The family of the deceased should demand a full
and searching investigation, if it be only to re-
lieve certain of its members from the cloud of
suspicion which now, justly or unjustly, rests upon
them.

We might easily multiply instances of unravel-
led mystery afforded by the experience of the
past few days in New York, But it will suffice
to refer to only two other cases—the assault upon
Mr. Edward Seaman, a merchant, who resides in
West Twenty-seventh street. and who was found
insensible at about one o’clock the other mornin
at the corner of Sixth avenue and Twenty-fift
street, having been attacked and severely beaten
by several unknown rowdies, without apparent
motive; and the probable murder of Mr, Charles
Ellet, another merchant, who left after dinner on
last Friday the hotel on Broadway where he
boarded, having mentioned that he was going up
town to receive a sum of four thousand dollars,
and whose body was found on Saturday floating
in the East river, bearing marks of robbery and
violence. These two recent instances must be
added to many which show that crime is fearfully
on the increse in our midst, whether this lament-
able fact-be due to the defective education of the
youth, who, as they grow up, swell cur own vi-
cious and dangerous classes, or to an unusual in-
flux of ‘ticket-of-leave men,’ escaped convicts and

rofessional villians from Great Britain and the
Juropean continent,

Srxcutan Presentment or Drati.—Leonard Mail-
man, one of the crew of the echooner Vivace, of Glouces-
ter, as we learn from the Cape Ann Adzertiser, died
very suddenly on Aug. 6th, while the vessel was at
George's Banks Ie had been out of health for rome
time, and on Wedneeday had an attack of bleeding of
the lungs, from which he recovered and appeared ar well
jas usual. On Tharsday he had another attack ofbleed-
ng. and while attempting to get into his berth, fell back
into the arme of one of his shipmates and expired im-
mediately.. Previous to hie making the trip, he had
strong presentiments that he never should return alive.
This be communicated to several of his friends, who
endeavoured to langh the matter off and get it off his
mind; but jt was of noavail, So strongly improseed
war hie of his approaching diseolution, that just before
Jeaving for George's, he wrote a Jetterto his brother's
wife, with imperative orders that it should not be opened
until she caw bles again. He was bronght back acorpee,
and on opening the ‘letter it was found to contain full
directions in reference to the disposal of his effects and
other matters connected tierewith,

At a certain college. tho senior class was under exam-
ination for degrees. The professor of natural philoa-
ophy was badgering in optics, and the point under
illustration was that, strictly and scientifically epeaking,
we see no objects, but their images depicted pp the
retina. In rto make the matter plainer, the pro-
fessor aSked the wag of the clase:
