of a country’s liberty, prosperity and

fabric as our educationul system should
in any way miss its high end, either
through a direliction ef duty or want of
enterprise in its directors,

THE TELEGRAPH,

By an Act of the Lieutenant Gov-
ernor, Council and Assembly of this
Island, certain rights are conferred, and
privileges are secured, exclusively to the
**New York, Newfoundland,and London
Telegravh Company,'’—one ef which is
that to this Company alone is granted
the exclusive right of laying down a sub-
marine cable to connect, as the Act ex-
presses it, this Island with the conti-
nent of America and Newfoundland,”

gave it as our opinion that this point was
selected by the Company, and approved
of by the Legislature, on account of its

vsted that the same reasons would
probably lead te the West Cape being

of having this attended to by the Com-
pany, we hepe will not escape tha imme- |
diate attention of our Government.

The sub-marine cable, when in ope-
ration gave general satisiaction to the
public. This in part was the result of
the judicious selection on the part of the |
company, of the efficient and faithiul
gentlemen whom they have placed in
their offices in this Island, who by the
manner in which they have served the
public, have render ny an application for
the services of the cable a pleasure as
well as 2 convenience, but as this con-
venience hag been so often destroyed by

line, steps should be taken to ensure the
laying ola second during the approach- |
ing summer; and we have preatly
siiderrated ihe business tact of the gov-
ernment, if the present state of aifluirs
will be suffered to exist much longer.

If the West Cape should be sclected
ax the point from whence the second
cable shall extend,the line of posts used,
for more than half the distance,could be
also used to extend a line to Alberton,as
along the greater part of the line, to
either places, cedar or juniper posts
can be obtained, and to no place would
they have to be drawn many miles,
which would render the laying down of
a line much cheaper than in some other
places.

In these and other matters the Goy-
ernment should lead the people—should
go in advance, and show their aptitude
and fitness to bear rule, by the wisdom
of their procedures ; and if the Company
require the aid of a few hundred pounds
to establish telegraphic communication
in these directions, we belicve it would
be an expenditure in favor of an exten-
sion of means for advancing some of the
best interests of the Colony,and therefmre
would coinimend itself to every true
Patriot.

OPENING OF THE LEGISLATURE,

At 2 o'clock yesterday, His Excellency |
the Lieut. Governor came down to the
Council Chamber and opened the Legis-
lature, His Excellency was escorted
from Government House by Captain
Holman’s Troop of Cavalry, and meet at
the entrance of the Provincial Building
by the Volunteers of the City. In can-
sequence of the bad state of the roads
many members were absent. We give
below a telegram, giving a short synopsis

Tt is an old adage that ‘* March comes
in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.”
This year it has proved so, so far as the
coming in is concerned. ‘The snow
storm of last Tucsday was the worst this
seasun. ‘Lhe roads are almost impass
ible. In some places there are mountains
of snow, and on the level over a foot
deep. ‘The postman from here did not
yeach Charlottetown until Wednesday,
‘To the Westward we learn that the storm
was very severe, and a very large body
of snow has fallen.

the Wesleyan Chapet on Friday eves. ing
last,on tho subject of “Christian Baptisin.”
Avery large number of persons assembled,
many of whom were unable to obtain an
entrance, in consequence of the crowded
state of the Chapels ‘The ler turer occupied
about an hour and a half delivering his,
lecture. It was well read, and the best of
order was maintained. We cannot refrain
from expressing an opinion on the very
excellent manner in which the meeting
was presided over by Finlay McNeill Esq.

Eaq., Barrister-at Law, delivered a lectare
on t+ The Tnagination” before this society,
on Monday evening last, Although the
evening was very ‘stormy, the hall was
densely. crowded, ‘The lecturer viewed
his theme in two aspects, viz: the province
of the facalty of imagination and its: cul-
ture. Asit would be impossible to give
anything of an outline of the lecture, so
as lo convey an adequate idea of its merits
tothe public, it will suffice to say that it
Was throughout highly instructive and in
rood taste, Manifesting the results of deep
resenvoh and pene’ tration of thought ou the
pare of the Icarncd lecturer; it was a
philosophical and scholarly effort. At the
close of the lecture, by request of the
President, Rev. Mr. Frame, Won. Mr,
Howlin, C, McLennan, Esq., Dr. Homer,
and Mr, ‘T. Kirwan made afew appropri-
ate remarks, after which a vote of thanks
was unanimously awarded to Mr, Kelly
for his able lecture.

Mr. 'T. Kirwan, on Monday evening
next, will give ‘Readings from the Poets,”
Doors open at 74; to commence at 8
o'clock. The public are respectfully in-
vited to attend. Reserved seats for ladies.

At Eldon, Belfust, at the residence of his
son, on the 25ch in after a severe illness of
two months, James Moore, Esy., aged 74
years. We sed was a native of London,
Kngland, and emigrated to this Island about
48 years ago. He was a man of earnest
Christian picty, seemed to live near his Sa-
yiour, and death only removed him from
the sorrows and pains of earth to a brighter)
world. Tle saw many changes in his adopted |
country, and has left a numerous family of
children and grand-children, and many well-
tried friends to mourn his departure.

Mr. Moore they have long i
known as a Christian gentlemay, srhose
thicndship was not evanescent or transitory,

him hy all who were tavored with his ac-
qiuantance. We sincerely
