SUMMARY OF RESOLUTIONS PASSED AT THE RECENT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE CANADIAN NATURE FEDERATION HELD AUGUST 28, 1980 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA I Garrison Diversion The Garrison Diversion scheme involves diverting waters from the Mississippi River drainage into the Nelson River drainage. The integrity of Manitoba's major drainage system Wie be violated. As it is expected that competing species, diseases, and parasites, as well as increased load of nitrates, phosphates, pesticides will enter the system endangering plant and animal species present. BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Canadian Nature Federation the United States Congress to cease funding that part of the Garrison Diversion Project that affects Canada, and: to de-author- ize it; b) urges the U.S. Department of the Interior to ensure - that no further work is permitted on facilities within the Nelson River Lg drainage, including the the Lonetree Reservoir and the New Rockford Canal; and c) urges the Governments of Canada and Manitoba to: take strong action to ensure that the con- struction of such . facilities as mentioned in a) and b) above is prevented, including legal action if necessary. a) urges the members of i II Proposed Dams in the Grand iy Canyon of the Stikine River The Stikine River flowing through British Columbia and Alaska is of outstanding scenic and wildlife value. The B.C. Hydro and Power Authority is considering the construction of two dams in the Grand Canyon of the Stikine which would destroy the wilderness character of the river and seriously threaten fishery resources, wet- lands and wildlife. BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Canadian Nature Federation urges the Governments of Canada and . British Columbia to act to : prevent construction of the dams, and to preserve the free-flowing character of the river and maintain the integrity of its associated fish and wildlife resources.
